Guys, can anyone put me in touch with the Sherrin Manufacturers or a Direct outlet to order footies. We are currently ordering Burley Footballs from Football Australia for our League here in Ireland, but I want to compare prices as the Burleys seem to wear quicker. I know you can order from AFL site and the such, but we wish to order in bulk and cut out the middle man. I can be contacted on paul.ryan@netexpress.ie Slainte.

Paul,

Burley Sekem is a major sponsor of the IAFC and of many international leagues. As an example, they supplied 8 of the 11 uniforms for last year's International Cup.

For the 2001 Arafura Games, Burley provided us with 30 World Team Uniforms (jumpers, shorts & socks) and 20 footballs.

These two examples alone demonstrate that Burley is a very strong supporter of international footy and will continue to be so.

You can approach Sherrin if you wish, but they are much more expensive and are light years behind Burley in terms of international awareness and exposure.

Some one told me about a comparison test done by AFL players on Burley and Sherrin balls. With unlabled balls they apparently couldnt tell the difference.

Does anyone have details of this.? Or know of other testing conducted to compare these and other brands.?

I don't know about that, I have one of each at home and the Burley is a bit more pointed at the ends. However still a good ball.

Where I play (St Marys VAFA) we train with Burleys but play with Sherrins.

The Burleys do seem a little more pointed, but still a good ball. They hold condition well.... The yellow sherrins get like kicking sandbags around on a wet night after the yellow stuff starts to come off.

not wrong... my last club (in the CDFL) used tke yellow ones at night, but being a battling country club we only goy newies at the start of the year... the end of the season sucked for training..

Pinched a couple of the AFL balls from Kardinia Park when the used to have the gate open on the Moorabool street side in the last quarter... (wouldn't pay to see the cats play inless they played the Lions and that was alway when I was playing) and they are heaps better.... more like a real ball.

Burley Footballs were a purely Western Australian brand made in Bassendean until taken over by Sekem in the 1960's. Sekem went and started having the balls made in India and even made plastic balls. They are just not the same anymore.

Burleys were for all of the first century the official brand of the WAFL

Old Joe Burley used to be a big supporter and promoter of football and he took East Perth on a tour of Tasmania in the 1930's for winning the premiership.

He originally grew up in Hamilton Victoria where he learn't about football which he later promoted in WA. He came from a very large family and a couple of his much younger brothers formed a company making ladies underwear called Berlei (years after Joe had already come to Perth and set up Burley Footballs).

Trivial, I know, but it's interesting to find out how a bloke like Joe Burley, my great grandfather, was in some way responsible for developing and spreading Aussie Rules around Australia.

That's a bit misleading.
Burley was the ball maker for Sherrin and then started his own company .
If you pay for league balls the quality is still there .
It's a bit of a myth that there is any difference .
Again there seems to be a difference between the yellow and red balls
with the yellow ball softer (easier to kick) and more absorbant(gets waterlogged quicker) but ithat s anedotal as well .
