Was rung last night by an old mate who has gone for the Saints for over 30 years, who was deeply disturbed.

"Rot", he said, "What is your coach doing? He's making all your players find work or study. What is footie coming to?"

(He was referring to an article in the Age:
http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/articles/2003/03/05/1046826435408.html)

He clearly thought this policy had no place at his beloved club of party boys.

What do you think of Rohde's new policy? I reckon it's good idea.

I agree too. I think it is not only important for the players for life after football (how many ex-players can the media sustain?) but for them now so there is some life away from football to keep them active (mentally or physically).

Who knows, with a bit of study, hard application and use of brain power they might get 100% on their International Studies exams!

A brilliant idea and other clubs will soon follow suit.
The percentage of footballers who make enough money from football to retire in their thirties in very small. Not many get media positions and it is usually the wealthy players that get those positions anyway.
Football can be all over for a player in a blink of an eye i.e Jason Snell, and players should encouraged to have a fall back career, i.e Matthew Croft.

I think it is a good idea, but it isn't Rhoders, David Parkin did it years ago, we are now following suit

It would be interesting to find out how many players actually took Parko's advice.
With the shrinking lists and the financial problems with country and suburban footy fringe players' careers are more than ever on a knife's edge.

i think what Rohde is doing is great! If you remember a few years back, Browny, when he first started his AFL career went out and spent all his money as quick as he got it, and in the end was borrowing money off his mother.

I believe this is great, the young players will have a future and the more senior ones, if not already, can build themselves a life after footy.

Yeah it think its a great idea. They all need time away from the club, so instead of going home and sitting on the couch watching tv they can all go to school or work.
I think rhodey is doing all the right things for this club.:)

Ah yes, but not only do they have to be doing something, they have a few a rules to abide by.

Like, they have to do x amount of classes n they (Rhoder) will be checking to make sure they are going and passing!

I think thats a good thing that he will be checking on them.

So do I but I'm pretty sure alot of them are a bit edgy that they dont get that extra sleep!!
