You can still make beautiful, large cities in Cities XL. There is a website XLnation.net which has tonnes of information and mods. It's not the greatest in terms of gameplay, but in terms of dynamics and gorgeous cities, it's second to none.

Also the first Cities XL started off with an online mode, which was pay-to-play, but it didn't last long.

That's the only thing this game was designed for: to be 'fun'. No substance, everyone is a winner type of game. It is basically impossible to lose, shocking game. Belongs on mobile phones more than anything
