AFL Club
West Coast
Good afternoon comrades. Simmo emerged out of the cave today, and with that, so shall I:

- Asked re Champion Data prediction of us being "the next superpower": Not relevant to what we do. They picked it two years ago as well. We've been a favourite of theirs for a while. Not something we're considering.
- Asked about it predicting us last year: Good luck trying to pick form. Not something we're going to pin on the wall.
- Simmo stops the questioning and launches into a lecture: I think it's a bloody disgrace bombard got done over in the POTY. If the AFL integrity unit isn't looking into Keyser Soze and the admins, there's something rotten in Dixie, let me bloody tell you.*
- Asked re Redden injury: Dom and Jack are both progressing really well. Training full this week. Should be available for later in NAB cup.
- Asked if line for round one: They're progressing well, ahead of schedule, but you never know. Only takes a tiny hiccup to miss the start of the season. It's a fine line. Joining the main group this week.
- Asked re the strength of the preseason and their conditioning going into it (re: earlier comments he had made in December that the boys had come back better than the previous year): Every club is happy with their preseason. It's probably more the concern that we started four weeks later, and how quick it would take us to catch up to the previous year's level. That was done well, especially over Christmas. They came back with real purpose and our numbers are good - 29 last year versus around 40 this year. Really pleasing.
- Asked re: effect of the no sub / rotation cap and what it means: You can try and predict what it means and how to manage it, but it will evolve. Don't anticipate massive change. Our group are pretty durable, pretty fit - hopefully an asset for us but hard to tell.
- Asked if it impacts ruck selections - Scotty v Gov: Good to have the flexibility, but with an extra on the bench it means most teams can do the same thing. Giles and Fraser and Gov all pushing for the second ruck with Scott. Plenty of things to test in the preseason.
- Asked re Gov playing ruck: [Simmo laughs it off] Yeah he wants to play on-ball as well. I'll tell him where he needs to play. See how we go. He'd be a different type of ruck than most.
- Asked re type of training: Intraclub last week, another one this week. [Simmo pauses as some bloke goes past on a lawnmower or some sort of jet turbine - do Lockheed Martin do testing in rural WA?] We're into full game mode now. It'll come quick.
- Asked how happy Simmo is: Never a really clean intraclub game, but that's what expect. Good hit out, no injuries.
- Asked re Adelaide NAB 1 selection choices: Good question. A lot of clubs doing the planning phase. You probably think two games puts you in good stead for round one. We travel to Adelaide and then have two home games so we'll probably manage the blokes accordingly - kids in NAB 1, seniors in 2/3.
- Asked re Parto: All the new draftees have been good. Hopefully we can give them all some exposure.
- Asked re Nicnat preseason / expectations: He's missed a couple of sessions with back tightness. A lot of senior boys have had clean preseasons, but it doesn't guarantee anything - maybe a bit more durability - a couple of the senior blokes limped to the line last year. Hopefully we can go the extra few weeks and finish the season off well. Good position at the moment.
- Asked re NN athleticism: He does things that not many can, but I'm used to it. I just want him on the track. He needs a different program than most, but he's more mature now.
- Asked re Jetta and position thereof: We need flexibility and he provides that. HF/Wing/Back - he's been training everywhere. Hasn't missed a session.
- Asked re being in Kalgoorlie: Nice to see another part of the state, did Bunno last year. Look forward to seeing the town.
- Asked re anything he especially wants to see: Look, there's a Subway in Maritana Mall. Me and the boys don't go to a new town without checking out the way of the sub, obviously. Get me some bloody jalapenos, stat.**
- Asked if the kids asked the players any tough questions [presumably a school visit]: One kid asked why did you join the AFL - Fraser answered that well.
- Asked re Jack Darling being asked about his most embarrassing moment: He said dropping a chest mark in the Grand Final. Good that he can make light of it.
- Asked if he's happy with his group of players: I'm happy to be at West Coast for the next few years. Really exciting time, still some development to come. No guarantees - expectations will be higher - are we mature enough to deal with that? That's yet to come.
- Asked re Ben at the club: Father-son Academy - he came to help with training. Nothing more than that.

Can't bloody wait to hear all the shit that will possibly not have happened this year.

Are you happy coaching this group of players? - Reporter

Happy to be here for the short term at the moment... - Simmo

Hmm ok, doesn't fill me with a lot of joy ...

I think he misspoke is all. Bloke signed a four year deal or whatever.

As long as he wins a couple of flags before he ****s off, I don't really see the issue.

I'd take it more that he knows that coaches can be just one bad season from being fired.

He was talking about this in kal yesterday, they asked are you happy here with these players and he said I'm happy with the group and how we are travelling at the moment but there are no guarantees.

He was putting more emphasis on that there is no guarantees we are going to have sustained success long term and we need to keep improving and getting better. Not that he was looking elsewhere after the short term.

Special edition Longmuir summary because I'm sick of work and WE'RE MERE DAYS AWAY FROM FOOTY WEOPUR ASL;IJFASL;DFJ ASD:

- Asked re young squad going over / most excited to see: Everyone. Great opportunity for all the blokes and those that haven't experienced AFL yet. Good to see the new guys like Giles and Jetts running out to as well.
- Asked what we'll do with Jetta: He brings speed and skill. The most satisfying thing about his arrival is how quickly he's settled in. How quickly he has got involved in our unity. We hope he shines on the field.
- Asked where he'll play: We're pretty set on that. He'll play wing / half-forward and get used to the blokes in that position like Hill and Jamie Bennell. Give him an opportunity to get settled and familiar with the team.
- Asked if the Masto injury influences Jetta's spot on the field: Possibly. There's a possibility he'll play at half back - we've also played Masto and Hill and Bennell through different spots [over the summer]. Things change, but we expect him to play wing/HF.
- Asked re Brown playing but not E-mac: They'll both play next week if opportunity presents. Brown is probably a smidge ahead of Easy. Great opportunity for him.
- Asked if E-mac has had a setback: No. Timing thing. Both come along very similarly the whole way. Best prep for Easy is to have some hitouts at home.
- Asked about coaching the blokes this week: Been nerve-wracking. Grateful to Simmo. One I'll be happy to hand back after this week.
- Happy with the opportunity. Big thing about our footy club and Simmo/Voz is that they want to develop people in the club. They see this as an opportunity for me to do just that.
- Asked if he wants to be a senior coach: I'm ambitious, but it's Simmo's team and I'm happy to continue to learn from Simmo and the other coaches. We all just help him out.
- Asked about life as a head coach: Look I was scared off for a while there. I did a podcast with some eagles folks about a year ago. They were a dead set pack of freaks. They weren't just fans - they were obsessed.*
- Asked about the change from line to head coach: The holistic view is the main thing as a head coach. Line coach means smaller view, smaller group of player. You deal with a lot more logistics as head coach. Bigger picture focus is a good learning experience.
- Asked about prep during NAB: We see two to three games being the best prep for the more senior players. I think footy is going down the path of premierships being won on good lists. Giving guys an opportunity this week as young blokes and put their claims against talented players, and a chance for young leaders. Schofield to captain this week. Ellis, Butler, Mitch Brown will have an opportunity to step up this week as leaders too.
- Asked re Lycett injury: It's a set back. All reports is he'll be right next week. Testing our depth in ruck early which is a good thing. Giles and McInnes both get a go.
- Asked re cover for Masto: Like for like with Jetta at the moment. Hard to replace Masto - lots of touches and uses it well - but he's a diligent player and hopefully he's back in 8-10.
- Asked re Cripps: He probably won't come up. Didn't train fully today so we're taking a no risk policy. He likely won't play.
- Asked re Matty Allen: He's got some good endurance, really good hands on the lead, reads the play really well, he's got work to do but he's going to be a big boy when he fills out. The way he gets around the ground is really impressive and his skills are really impressive. He has a fair bit of work to do but interesting to see how he goes this week.
- Asked re preseason overall: A lot of minutes into a lot of blokes. Been Sheed and Redden the only two who've missed parts of preseason really. Both trained really well this morning and both a similar build so they've been good for each other. Step ahead from last year.
- Asked re Cole and Parto playing this weekend: Definitely. Parto's a SA boy so it's good for him to play in front of friends in family. Both have shown a lot during preseason.
- Asked re ticket prices varying: I'm worried about coaching the forward line and the team. That's about it. Haven't spoken to Gill about ticket prices mate. [big lorfs big lorfs]
- Asked re Darling flexibility / trips to midfield: Interesting one that one. Last year off a low base of fitness we tried to just play him as a forward and that limits him a little bit. Whether midfield or just rotating through the forward line spots more, he should be able to get up to half forward and run blokes around. We have flexibility in our forward line - and if we really need a bigger body on ball we can have that up our sleeve - forward line coming along at the moment. I feel like we're step ahead from last year.
- Asked if Darling was cooked by finals: The lack of preseason can catch up to you yeah. Just as much mentally as physically. It's a draining thing to do, a big chunk of rehab. Playing and training very well. Stressful time when you've got a bad navicular. We expect to see the old Jack Darling back.
- Asked if Jack is leaner this year: Probably an optical illusion. He has a tan at the moment Thommo [lorfs]. He's shown great signs with his contested marking. I think he's definitely stronger - not sure about leaner.

* May not have happened.

Longmuir post-match:

- Asked what we take out of today: We went into the game wanting to give kids opportunity. The kids get to measure themselves up against a solid AFL team and that's what Adelaide are. Some of them hit the mark today, others have work to do. They got an opportunity.
- Asked about how to take lessons from today: We wanted four quarters today and quality effort - teamwork and effort - some patches where we didn't do that. We will work with the kids to show them where they were good and where they were bad. We learn and they can take it into their next efforts.
- Asked re Giles effort: We thought he competed really well. He's done that since he got here. He competes hard and has done so in our match sims. That's all we ask of him.
- Asked if Don Pyke has taken much of the Eagles system with him to Adelaide: Wasn't really focused on that. I think he's brought a lot of fast ball movement - they were good last year but they did it really well today. I think time will tell, though.
- Asked re Jetta quiet day: Not disappointing. We expect him to take time to get to know the players and the system. I'm sure he'll given probably play all three NAB games, we expect he'll become more familiar with how we do things by round 1.
- Asked re poor result: I've actually been stockpiling canned goods, bottled water and goat's blood in case we lost by a lot today. I know it's only the first week of preseason, and we played a bunch of toddlers against a senior team, BUT THE END IS NIGH. IT'S IN REVELATIONS PEOPLE.*
- Asked re likely composition next week: We'll play our best side in weeks 2 and 3. 14 or 15 guys in.
- Asked re Crows fast ball movement and whether it caught Eagles out: We started well, pressure was up. We put good pressure onto start but the young blokes got tired and the hunt dropped right off. Their ball movement exposed us from that point in - forwards got top supply. We want a sustained effort.
- Asked about how to cope with opposition scoring streaks and how to cope: We've worked on momentum and we want senior players to take ownership of those moments. We'll learn from it. There were times we didn't get the basics right in that pressured atmosphere.
- Asked re Brown/Duggan return: All the players got through. I thought Browny's attack on the contest was good. Duggo worked his way in through the game. Number one thing is that we're fit and injury-free. Onto next week and hopefully better effort.
- Asked if any of the young blokes will enter round one calculations: It's tough. We've got a fit squad and the senior boys will reenter the team next week, but I thought Tom Lamb played well. Snadden did some good stuff. All the young blokes showed they have stuff to work on, but they've all got AFL qualities.
- Asked re Hutch best 22 prospects: Yeah hopefully we have a competitive squad - one that makes it tough to hold down spots because of pressure from the fringes. Once you're in the side, though, it's hard to get out of it. He was given an opportunity today and we'll review how he did. He'll probably get an opportunity to put his best foot forward again next week too.
