Why would Stubbs retire? He's a first year player..

Poorly phrased. Johnno to retire, the other two to be delisted.

And yep, like Kirby, wasn't much of a fan of his squibb on the forward flank in the second half of the game. Pretty ugly. Wasn't a great night for him all round.

wouldnt mind seeing him caff and mcarthy go to GWS in the mini draft... all of them getting passed by the young kids and eventually not even gonna be in the best 25 with fasolo young ect and the 2011 draft kids. Would be a huge win if we lost those 3 and got a young superstar in the mini draft (plus more salary cap space)

OMG, people forget very quickly how good of a player Caff was in the finals and GF's last year. When fit he is in our best 18, let alone 22 or 25.

Caff ain't going anywhere, injuries have hit him hard this year, and with a full pre season under his belt he will be 2012's Leon Davis.:thumbsu:

As for the thread topic, Bucks MK II is depth, and handy depth at that, but if he is playing in the finals we have a weakness teams can exploit. He still hasn't played a lot of senior footy, and with more senior game time next year, he could improve further, but at the moment he isn't best 25 IMO.

At least 3 players have to go at the end of the year. If we don't trade anyone out or even if we trade player for player 3 have to be delisted. Buckley has filled a spot and been ok to good a few times but I don't see any future in him as opposed to a younger player. He has to be one fo the ones being looked at.

Anytime S.Buckley is playing in our team, it basically means we are missing a few out of the backline.

Waste of time IMO, hopefully Bucks has the sense to de-list him at the end of the year.
Under any pressure he panics and either looks for quickest possible handball off(doesn't take any notice of who's around the bloke he's going to handball too)/kicks it blindly as far as he can.!

No hope of playing finals. Not even close.

Caff is:
a) Not fast enough to play Leon's role.
b) Not explosive enough to play Leon's role.
c) Not as nuturally talented as Leon
d) Is currently a lead-up forward flanker being played in the backline.
e) ALL OF THE ABOVE PLUS MORE

A fit Caff is best 22, yes. And he plays a great lead-up role in the forward line (like a mini Dawes). He plays a great defensive forward role, too.
Without a fit caff, we have had Maxi put in the forward line as a defensive forward. NOT WORKING.

I watched last year's qualifying final against bulldogs again friday night. Maxwell was superb. But his role is backline being either a seeballpunchball kind of player or, even better, loose man in defense.
Caff was quiet in that game, but he will never be like Leon.

Getting technical: Leon would possess around 75-90% fast twitch fibres in his body. This means he is able to go at the ball explosively, but intimitantly. He has been well trained and is very good aerobically now too. This is why he is an asset in the backline. That, and he has one of the best kicks at Collingwood/AFL.
Caff would be about 60-70% fast twitch fibres (i would be surprised if he's 70, but could be wrong - wouldn't mind finding out what his sprints were like when he was at draft camp). This means he is predominantly anaerobic (good at explosive movement - like Davis) but has a bigger aerobic take than Davis. To be honest, Caff might even be 50-50% fast and slow twitch fibres because he still has pace at the end of game's. He is suited to a defensive forward role. He will never be any-year's Leon.

Like this bloke as much as I liked Leigh Brown circa 2009 in the 1pt win against the Bulldogs.

I don't think he's a premiership quality player. I've lost count of how many times he's fumbled a mark or ruined a chain of play for us with a terrible decision.

All i can say is i hope none of the regular backmen are injured if we make the granny.
His ball use is terrible at times.
Ben Johnson is streets ahead of him since he has come back.

Honestly, I am not the biggest Simon Buckley fan; but I do think I am too harsh. While I think he makes some dreadful decisions, I do wonder, because our team has so many exceptional players, do I forget that some players are going to be on the list that are "just" good, not fantastic?
Because we have so many really superb players, do we sometimes diss those that would be considered really good at other clubs?

Definetly still something there to work with and don't think he should be delisted or traded (unless there is certainly something better).

I get frustrated with Bucks at times. At one point he needed to run at a Brisbane player tonight, but he just watched him run in and kick a goal.

He will not play finals this year.

Yeah I saw that too, I'd have dragged him from the ground and told him to get changed and go home. I have had my doubts about him and got told I was wrong when I questioned his disposal reliablility but that sort of thing at this level is a disgrace. If he was a star and felt like he didn't have to do that sort of thing you would drop him to teach him a lesson, but he's a fringe player trying get a place on our team and he can't be bothered putting in the effort.
Based on this effort I wouldn't keep him in preference to any other player on our list.

I wasn't trying to compare Caff at all to Leon Davis in terms of physical or physiological make up or ability, I was merely saying that a full pre season for Caff could mean he becomes 2012's "good news" story at the Pies, and that he could then become next years version of Leon Davis in that way.

Caff is to me, and always will be a half forward/forward who can spend small amounts of time in the midfield for specific roles, he doesn't have the "tools" to play the attacking, piercing role that Leon has played this year.

after all his time at collingwood... and a precarious hold on his spot in the team he STILL managers to break team rules last weekend, and mick roasted him about it. His decision making is terrible and will not improve, i would like to see him traded.

Average player at best, would not delist him at years end because he is a depth player who can come in and play a role. If eveyone is available for selection he should never be picked. Has all the physical attributes to make it but unfortunetly his decision making is well below average. Tends to just get the ball and boot it as far as he can.

In saying all this i believe he has slightly imrpoved his game and deserves another year on the list, however that will see him out for mine as the younger kids in his position will go past him.

He's a good footballer until he has to dish it off. He's a solid defender, can take a strong overhead mark, is quick for his size, can kick the ball well, but his decision making is a massive flaw in his game. It's not just the constant bombing of the ball long to a pack which is bad, it's his ignoring of open players and also handballing to guys under pressure which lets him down. He pretty much makes players around him look like they're playing poorly.

I really don't understand why this board is so anti Buckley and so pro goldsack. To me they have the same weaknesses - more fumbly than the rest of the team and suspect decision making. They also both possess excellent if different strengths. If I wanted a more defensive role, I'd pick Goldsack. If I wanted a link-man role, I'd select Buckley.

Goldsack is much better than Buckley at everything IMO. That said, I'd have Goldsack on the trade table. He'd have some value and I really want to get into the draft earlier. I'd also have Buckley on the trade table but I doubt anyone would be interested. McCaffer should be up for trade as well. McCarthy isn't going to get any interest. We have to may way for list spots. Some players have to go.

I thought he played well last week, despite what I've been reading on BF. one particularly brilliant piece of play in the last q, plus some other very good clearances from defence. Haven't seen him much but from last week he does seem a bit suspect in the air but hopefully can improve in that area. Or maybe his opponent that outmarked him a couple of times was a mismatch.

It's a ruthless approach and I'll be interested to see if under Buckley we try and squeeze out a few players for an upgraded pick. Would free up cap room and allow hopefully another A grader whose wage demands wont be high for a few years.

That strategy though risks exposing our depth, unless the club are very confident about the new blood coming through.

The risk of exposing depth is a fair trade off for the potential of a top end talent coming onto the list IMO. If we can't bring in a Tom Young in a pich instead of a Goldsack and not drop too much in that process then we actually need the top end talent coming through.

It is important that while we try and win flags we also try and extend the run with quality kids. There is hope that the NSW scholarship kids will in part do this.
