Hey guys - I've been playing poker for about a month now. My first $200 didnt last long... I claimed some bonuses but havent even racked up the hands to receive those.

I put another $25 in the other day and seem to have worked out a better strategy to increase my balance....

Play Sit and Go's

On these tables you wont bust you balance with a big loss, you cant really get sucked in by those who prowl around and throw in the big bets, and if you get unlucky you dont lose as much.

At the moment I am 'winning' 1/3 sit and go tables I play (which is about a 4/1 return)... and make the money 2/3. It seems like a good approach if your good at these tables.

I'm considering multi-tables but obviously risk increases

I like Sit and Go's for the reasons you stated and the fact I don't have much money at the moment at all. Try some multi-tables and even some steps. Sounds like you're playing at Party Poker - if so I reckon you should try Steps every now and then. $3 for Level 1 and if you finish top two for a few tournaments in a row then by Level 6 you'll be playing off against nine other people for 1st prize of $2000.

Yeah thats very true.

So with the steps do you have to play them all at once... I figure the way it happens is you win a table then they put u into the next level one... correct?

Plenty of options thats for sure.

I'm at Party Poker correct. Signed up about a month ago, peeved to miss out on the $50 thing.

I play SnG's quite a lot. Used to play on ultimate bet, but I've started playing on full tilt.

How do you go?

I dont really have a strategy. Like at the start I understood that you should just let the others shoot each other down and then make a move. I often see people just fold for ages doing this.

However I've adopted the approach of playing most hands (basically just skip a few at random) that stay on the blind and arent raised and taking a look at the flop and go from there. If your lucky you can build a balance early that allows you to sit back later when the blinds are raised and those who were sitting out have to get involved... if you dont get the hands early its not really a big loss but rewards are much higher.

If anyone challenges me early I just let it go unless my probability is high.

I just think by playing as many hands as you can your obvioulsy 'in the game' with a chance rather than limiting your chance to a few hands dealt once the table gets down to 5-7 players with your 1800 - 2200 balance. By then I have about 3500-4500...

This may sound novice to others but I'm only new..

I get in with marginal hands while the blinds are low, provided there isn't too much action going on otherwise. If there is, I will let others take each other out.
It varies with each game I guess. Where do you play?

I'm on Party Poker. There are always plenty of games on so I guess there isnt much more that I care about... I was playing tournies early but they are a waste of time and the times are restrictive. I'm generally only a 1-2 hour player.

Plus I win on there more than I did when I gave Poker Stars a go.

Sounds like you have a similar approach however I'll pretty much play any hand at times just for the sake of if it flop comes out with a pair of 2's, etc and you have a 3rd you'll have a pretty commanding hand and be able to hit them hard early raising on there K's and A's...

It's hard to read on the net obviously, but it's possible. Player notes are a great idea. After a while you get used to not relying on your hole cards as much.

Yeah notes are good to hit a big pot however I found it to be a struggle at the best of times in sit and go's. You get your couple of guys that like to raise everything early (they usually bite the dust anyway), you kind of know who will fold under pressure.... I try to just take every hand on its merits, I found that when I tried to read players I was doubling my risk and confussion I guess...

I'd be competing against the hands... and then at times a player when I persisted with hands too much on a hunch. Because you'd go with something on a hunch because this guy has raised 'everything' or folded everything then you've got but they end up having AA or something.

Plus as the table progresses the situation changes (numbers decrease & blinds increase) so notes are ineffective in the sit and go's...

duno... very challenging.

If that player survives after continual all-ins, and gets you thinking, they have done a good job. Most players won't get to that stage though if they continually throw all their chips in.

It might be worth trying limit sit n go's, where one mistake doesn't end your tourney

yeah I usually avoid the limits in sit and gos... I actually accidently went into a tourney limit game and done quite well... was in the final 50 out of 1,500... then my sister rolled her car... I had to shut down and the rest is history. haha.

I guess the thing is with a limit it doesnt end other peoples game either... which is not what you want. At least with no-limit the crap players are exposed early (which hey I admit, are sometimes me)

Don't limit sit n go's run for like days, sometimes weeks if it's 2 or 3 tables?

They have these things called blinds.........

I'd say the average non turbo no limit sng would be almost an hour. Limit just over.

Possibly 10 minutes difference on average.

I've found that it takes ages to lose the first player in limit SNG's, but once the blinds are up you start losing players very quickly.

Eg. I played a couple of limit SNG's on PokerStars with 18 players. Once it got down to about 16 players left it rapidly fell to about 7 or 8 because the limits were not just eating into smalls stacks, but medium stacks too.

Tell me about it! I play it occasionally and usually don't mind it but it sure has it's moments. Last night I lost a hand with pocket kings to a guy chasing running diamonds holding Td 6d. There was no T or 6 on the flop but there was one diamond. Sure enough he hit his diamonds...

No offence to limit players but Limit makes me want to punch my own face in.

I only have an issue with Limit tournaments, not Limit cash games.

It's been awhile since I played Limit at Crown (now 5/10, used to be 4/8) but I really like the game.

Oh yeah nothing like having a hand and not being able to take the pot away from chasers.

had a few games tonight, progress report is:

1st
2nd
Last
1st
Last
2nd
9th

Half of those were at Poker Stars... Party was down for maintenance so I went to Stars to play with play money and I had $25 in there!! Must have been for my sign up but I hadnt played any more racks...?!

I played three today before going to work, 8th through a stupid mistake, last, and then second - should have been first but I made another mistake and handed back the chip lead while heads up.

Last? Try "exited in the first hand" - had Kc Ks, flop Kh 8s 7c, arseclown bet and I raised, he went all in and I called. He had 8c 6c and had gone all in. Here fishy fishy! Turn Ac river 4c and he made his flush. Couldn't believe it.

If I can survive the early bloodbath with enough chips, and don't blow it with stupid plays, I could soon be back above $50. I'm definitely getting better.
