I have always wondered why there seems to be no regulation in regards to the size of footy grounds. It seems most professional sports have a standard field size, whether being soccer, basketball, tennis or most other sports. This minimizes home ground advantage because every field is the same. I understand AFL is an oval making it more difficult, but surely there should be at least some standard in distance of length and width, even be it measured from the centre ground.
IMO, the SCG is way too small a ground. The 50 reaches the centre square and it only takes 3 kicks to get from one end of the ground to the next! It has always bothered me when watching games, and I feel it creates less space, and therefore less free flowing football and more stoppages.
Is there a reason there are different size grounds, or am I missing something? Or do people think it adds to the game in some way?
