I have always wondered why there seems to be no regulation in regards to the size of footy grounds. It seems most professional sports have a standard field size, whether being soccer, basketball, tennis or most other sports. This minimizes home ground advantage because every field is the same. I understand AFL is an oval making it more difficult, but surely there should be at least some standard in distance of length and width, even be it measured from the centre ground.

IMO, the SCG is way too small a ground. The 50 reaches the centre square and it only takes 3 kicks to get from one end of the ground to the next! It has always bothered me when watching games, and I feel it creates less space, and therefore less free flowing football and more stoppages.

Is there a reason there are different size grounds, or am I missing something? Or do people think it adds to the game in some way?

Almost grounds are multi use, in fact they're cricket grounds with the AFL being a secondary tennant (even if they put way more bums on seats). Cricket has no defined ground dimensions so Aussie Rules is played on odd sized grounds, something that I think adds to the game.

There are grounds with less surface area than the SCG because of narrowness.

The shortness of the SCG means dominant teams can rack up scores if they go direct, but it's teams getting lost in the wide wings, and the Swans' pressure, which creates the impression of lack of space. Watch the second half of the Hawks game from earlier this year to see how free-flowing the ground can seem if the Swans aren't applying their usual pressure and tackling.

Soccer grounds arent all the same. Some are played on different surfaces(artificial turf), and you can change the grounds limits, within a limit. (i think 80-120 M length wise if i recall.) It depends on the league. Internationals though, now have a set limit i just read. dont know about any other field sport.

Bastketball, Tennis are smaller sports, in terms of field length, or man built. Cricket ovals are bigger, older, and cricket doesnt care that much. hence the AFL dont really care. I dont see it as that much of a concern. Its great that each ground offers something different. Great teams will find a way to win. ala Hawks this year against us.

Of course the Swans fans are supportive of leaving as is. Add another game to the list of horrible SCG games after today.

Yeah, if they lengthened the ground maybe it wouldn't rain so much.

Lol, good post.
Dont have a problem with the SCG personally, though the fact that the grounds are of different sizes irks me a little.
