OTHER TEAMS???? As if!!
Our skill levels have increased 10 fold in the last few weeks and I must ask the question "why is this SO?"

A few weeks ago I watched at team that probably couldn't beat the auskick kiddies but all of a sudden, bam we get it together, is this jus modern day football

For god sake even Thornton is playing bloody good footy.

Can anyone please explain

mike brown won the NBA coach of the year by basicially letting lebron james take over the motivational and player management side of his job - perhaps harvs has the same idea with pav?

The Ears (C o n f i d e n c e) The Ears

It's both explicitly and implicitly generated by confidence.

Explicitly: They make the right decisions and execute better.
Implicitly: Players have more space and time with the ball, so are under less pressure.

Hasleby also had a large part to do with it as well. He put the ball into the hands of guys like Duffield, Peake and Hill where they had lots of space and time to get it right. I expect opposition to put a blanket tag on Hasleby over the next few weeks.

Skill wise there is still certainly some improvement, which I believe will come as Ibbotson,Johnson, Hill, Mundy and Suban find more of the ball. Though I agree, confidence goes makes a world of difference.

I have come to accept and embrace the fact that the likes of Schammer and Duffield will never be polished, but their attack on the ball and willingness to have a crack compensates for the odd clanger.

i thought duffield had a lot to do with that with his good skills and decision making down back. He actually played really smart and creative for a change. How good was that grubber he kicked in congestion to a lose man on the wing? Also how good was schammers kick that set up hills first goal... WTF is going on here!

It seems history is repeating itself....although it maybe a little early to say.

2006
6 - 6 at the mid way point
getting absolutely rogered b the media
had the incident at the pub with heath black (or something like that)
played sydney the next week (played superbly but lost)
when on to win the next 9 games

2009
0 -4
getting rogered by the media
had the KKK incident
played sydney and won
won the next game as well

i know it is being a bit optimistic, but one can dream
:D

Large correlation between skills and work rate IMO ... higher work-rate leads to more / better options presenting themselves and players in space more often with less pressure on disposal.

Our skills were pathetic in the first half this week too.

Definitely a "mental" thing.

Our work rate in the first half was crap. Once we started working hard in the second half our skills lifted, confidence grew and we kept getting better.

What was the game plan against WC? Did we continue in an attacking vein like the Sydney match? Did they go back to the rolling zone in the 1st half?

If the players have confidence in the game plan and understand their role it makes it so much simpler. It is a lot easier to back your judgement and take the first option if you know what you are doing. It allows you more time to execute skills under less pressure without second guessing yourself.

Pretty much from what I could tell on the TV and then in the second half it was back to man on man. The first half was not as bad as the first four games, but there was still a lot of flat-footed play and none of the running/creating type play. There were some shocking passages in the second quarter were we simply couldn't get the ball out of our back half. Consequently, the toast were carving us up though thank god they couldn;t kick a score. Then in the second half we were a different team. I hope Harve and co have learnt the lesson. We have to play on and run to be effective.

The weagles aren't exactly a top 8 side. Their midfield is a shambles to begin with, besides Kerr who is consistently inconsistent who do they have? Priddis? Dud. Masten? Young dud. Selwood? Can only tag. When your ruckman is almost leading your side in possessions you know the midfield is a shambles.

Even with that they would have easily won if not for inaccuracy, so whilst the win seems sweet and I'm glad they won it for Pavlich it isn't some thing you can hang your hat on and go "Defining moment for our young team". That game is likely going to come next year or the next with more rookies in the team.
