There seems to be a consensus that sledging people with depression in football is bad and rightly so. But how about the people who come on BF and badmouth other posters ...... maybe they are abusing people who might be depressed too. Not that it is ok to do it to anyone .......

It's easy to flog it up and lack feeling when it feels like you're posting and responding to a bunch of words on your screen, but it's important to remember there is always a human being on the other end.

I think people that people take the interwebz too seriously.

Not everyone has a thick skin!

I've seen some fairly disgusting stuff that takes abuse/sledging to the upper levels and I've had my own experience with personal threats (yes, on BF).

Generally, if you have to think, "oh is this crossing the line?", then it most likely isn't worth posting.

All I can say is, check out the sig of Doss. Since that event happened, many people chilled out, including some of the usual nutbags on the NM board.

I'm not sure if you're taking the piss or actually serious, so I will answer your question.

I was referring to The Scales. There is a thread on the Essendon board which relates to it.

Doesn't sound like it was anything to do with the internet from the first post
No, probably not, but I think the wider point is that it always pays to keep in mind that you just don't know the circumstances of those you're talking to on the net and what impact words could have, depending on their frame of mind.

For example, it's sadly not an uncommon thing (thankfully, not at all common here but it has occurred) on the internet for people to tell each other to off themselves. Now, for those of sound frame of mind, they'll probably just laugh at it.

If you were already in a suicidal frame of mind and you read something like that...well, who knows?

Don't feel special, that's pretty much the way he spoke to everyone on here.
Bunsen reminded me of Bender on The Breakfast Club.

Around 90% of human communication is done through body language and tone. Only 10% through spoken words. The internet removes the former, making mis-understandings happen all too freakently (prime examples in the above posts). The simple phrase "You're a dickhead haha" can be interpreted as a small joke with no offense, to full blown insult and mocking laughter. But when said in person it is much easier to understand and interpret the way it was originally intended.

Personally, I try to limit the abuse I throw online to other users I haven't met in person (will tell a friend of mine to go **** himself quite happily, someone on here, less so) but if I jokingly call someone a dickhead that I don't know, I try to use smileys as a way of expressing my tone.

Indeed, very true. Let's use BALKAN's post as an example.
