It's not that, because we usually go at it before going to sleep, and I still can't. It's more a case of not being able to stretch out and sleep how I want to. I sleep with my arms and legs spread basically, as does she, and she usually falls asleep before me so she gets dibs on that style. Need a bigger bed. :(

Sometimes I have weeks where there's a lot on my mind and I am waking up throughout the night sometimes unable to get back to sleep. I have had this in dribs and drabs all through my adult life.

Here's what works for me when I'm struggling or got something important the next day.

Early small dinner (5 at the latest) or even just a snack.
Vigorous half hour work out around 7. You'll feel wide awake after this of course.
Cool down walk around the block.
Bloody hot shower with iced water to drink during.
Sit on balcony and do nothing for a bit, get quite bored.
Go to bed, no rooting. Try to read a book. ZZZZZZZZZ

No TV, radio, phone, computer.

Every time I am lights out until alarm goes off or daughter wakes.

It can be tough to get out of a poor sleep cycle / rut.

One thing I did a number of years ago was get rid of the clock radio. Nothing worse than lying awake for ages and constatnly looking at the time and stressing "only got 5 hours left' , "only got 4 hours left" - what time it is in the middle of the night when you are trying to get to sleep is information you dont really need - it just adds to the stress.

I need to stay off Internet before bed - interesting Wikipedia articles or BF discussions can stimulate the brain too much.

I'm a very light sleeper. Cannot stand snorers.

And **** all those people who can sleep on planes. Srlsy go get ****ed.

i sleep like a baby on short domestic flights. but on long haul international flights when i really need it i struggle. definitely a mental thing.

long haul int flights are about the only time i consistently struggle to fall asleep.

the only other time i struggle to sleep is the night after a big night, but a lot of that is due to the fact i often sleep till 1or 2pm. but it's still annoying that your lethargic all day then you put your head down about 11 and you suddenly can't sleep. the worst is sundays then you start monday with only a few hours sleep. ****ing alcohol.

GD friends,

I've always been quite a solid sleeper over the years. Rarely dream, snore, drool etc.

Recently, I've been snoring a heap and can't stop dreaming.

Anyone know why that might be?

I'm a bit stressed over Uni work and my work schedule, but not hugely.

Just pissing me off (and everyone else in my house who hears it).

Anybody else have similar experiences with their sleep patterns at all?

How old are you?

The brain still develops all the way up to 25/26 years of age. Could be just a stage of development.

Lucky you werent like me when I turned 22. I started having epileptic seizures at night for no apparent reason, and have to take meds for it to this day 8 years on.

Haha, same thing happens to me. I sleep in a frikkin coffin, meanwhile the missus pretends shes a startfish (we she pretty much is, but thats another story)

Does anyone struggle sleeping with someone? I have a girlfriend of 2 years and when we sleep together I can never sleep properly. We sleep in a queen size bed yet it feels like i'm confined to the smallest part of the bed. Occasionally i'll sleep well with her (well being five or six hours), but other times, nope. Doesn't make me look forward to moving in together. :(

Yep I'm the same. It sucks. Just a lack of space and it's too hot all the time

I always have the deepest sleep in the early hours of the morning - say 3am to 7am - which is obviously not compatible with waking up feeling relaxed.

I don't know how/why :(

Can't remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed

Given the times that I work sleep times are all over the place.

- On a semi normal weeknight I'm often asleep about 4:30 and wake up about lunchtime. Work goes from 2:30-10:30 for those that want to know. However if I go on a training run I usually do this about 5AM, finish about 6AM and tend to sleep between 7AM and 1PM.

- Friday nights during footy season I try to get to sleep about 1AM but often have to watch a DVD of something to fall asleep during the old footy/movie, meaning it's closer to 3AM before I'm asleep. I need to be up at 6:30 most Saturdays for umpiring at 8:30.

- Saturday nights during footy season I'm generally asleep at 8:00 and up about 3 hours later. I try to go back to sleep at 12/1AM (with mixed success) and wake up at 4AM for a 6AM work start on Sunday Mornings.

- If I don't have to go to work I try to go to sleep about 7AM and wake up close to 3PM. Don't ask why.

- If I have a running event on Sunday I try to go to sleep at about 10PM on Saturday Night and wake up about 4AM. Again the 10PM time is done with mixed success and I often have to have a sleep on Sunday afternoon.

- If flying anywhere I try to get a window seat and nod off shortly after take off. Often good for a couple of hours. Problem is I don't trust myself to get up early enough to sleep that night before getting up early enough for the early flights that I tend to book. Ashamed to say I have nodded off a couple of times at the cricket, although I didn't miss any action on Day 2 at the Gabba last year (it rained all day).

- Yes I have fallen asleep at work on lunch breaks (30 minute cat naps) for a little too long once or twice. Not that the other co-workers noticed (old farts).

What do you do for job? These hours sound like total balls

Sometimes I sleep 5 hours and get up feeling awake. I don't try to get back to sleep but then a couple of hours later bang the tiredness hits me and I'm out again.

I say don't try to fall asleep unless you have that heavy eyelid type feeling. What's the point?

Don't use caffeine heavily after you've had a good sleep, you will stay up for 20 hours unless of course you're one of those all day drinkers like many are in which case it's not going to do much to stimulate you.

I get up at 7am at the very latest. Most days it's before 6:30.

Asleep by 10:30 up at 5:30, always feel great in the morning. You need a routine to get the most of your sleep though

Understand completely. My partner and I have lived together for 3+ years and have decided sleeping in seperate rooms/beds is the way to go. Our relationship is perfectly normal otherwise and we actually find that it stops arguments caused by sleepless nights. There is also something incredibly sexy about her knocking on my door in the morning and slipping into my bed..,
