The Stef is actually a decent tap ruckman! The hit out to Jurrah was brilliant.

If I had anything to do with it Martin would be a sure thing for our number 2 ruck spot each week. His versatility ensures it. Jamar, Meesen, PJ are in a battle for the number 1 spot, Spencer is pretty safe in the number 5 spot (although I'm not going to completely rubbish the guy).

If only we could combine the positives from Jamar, Meesen, PJ and even Spencer into one good ruckman and then use Martin for backup. The skills we'd take:

Jamar:

Marking
Centre bounce work

Johnson:

Pace
Tackling
Kicking

Meesen:

General athletisism
Handballing

Spencer:

Set shot goalkicking

Well I suppose every player has to be given a weakness.

I assume this is when the ball actually hits the boot? ;)

I'm liking the option of a Stef and Jamar duo able to rotate thru the ruck and forwardline. Each offer different sets of attributes (Russian - big strong battering ram, Martin - athleticism). I know today was one out of the box for Jamar but I've seen for a few years he's been capable of the mark in the forwardline, he just couldn't kick. That's improving and I'm confident he can be more regularly reliable in that end of the ground. Martin seems to pick up his roles pretty quickly and looks extremely versatile and is picking up the whole rucking thing quite quickly.

I was at the game on Saturday with my old man and we had the same conversation. He very rarely got beaten in the tap outs and did some nice work, though sometimes they were sheep dogged by the classier Carltank mids.

He could have been one of the best on the weekend if he had not muffed those few kicks. Twice, may of been 3 times, he stepped around an opponent only to miss the kick. But his mobility is a huge positive at his height. Also preseason training as a ruck can only help.

3 years time might be the number 1 ruck we are looking for!
