MATTHEW Smith will be the playing coach of the New Norfolk football team in 2004. NNDFC president Greg Hudson made the announcement at the club's trophy presentation evening on October 25. Smith, who is a product of local underage football, won the club's best and fairest award in the fourths in 1992 and the thirds in 1993 - the same year he got his first taste of senior football. He has given the club valuable service since then, apart from 2001 when he coached Leyton on the mainland and in 2002 when he was playing coach of Kingston. In that year Kingston gave New Norfolk a touch-up in the SFL elimination final played at Kingston, with Smith booting five match-winning goals.
On returning to the Hawks this year he won the SFL goalkicking with 67 majors. He is a player who gives his best at all times and can play in most positions on the field. There has also been a change in the other coaching roles with former star player and coach Hedley Thompson holding down the assistant (bench) coach's job where no doubt his vast experience of the game will be put to full use. Former player and coach of the 2002 colts premiership side, Adrian Collins, has returned to the club after a stint as assistant coach at University and will be playing coach of the reserves. Clay King, who chalked up 265 games for New Norfolk including 151 in senior company, will be in charge of the colts next season. At the moment the coaching position of the Under 17s has not been filled. Congratulations to those appointed so far and may New Norfolk fly high next year.

THE trophy night went off well despite a smaller crowd than last year. The worst feature of the night was that many players saw fit to go elsewhere for their entertainment which unfortunately is a trend these days, but no doubt all will be about come final payment night. There were three or four who could not attend owing to work commitments. For those that did go along, there was an excellent meal and one-man band Dean McKibben performed at his best. The trophy recipients were _ seniors: Jason Wilton (Club Champion); Roger Belcher and Matthew Smith, runners-up; Kim Harvey (most consistent, and best in finals); Zac Clayton (utility player); Brock Ackerley (most serviceable); Richard Rawnsley (Boy Wilton Memorial best backman); Adrian Burdon (coach's award); Luke Joseph (most improved).
Reserves: Dean King (Club Champion); Rikki Braslin and Marcus Windsor, runners-up; Jason Green (most consistent); Charles Downie (most serviceable); Rodney Burles (best backman); Arthur Eyles, Jason Triffitt and Mark Strong (coach's awards).
Colts: Rodney Oakley (Club Champion); Mark Cashion (runner-up and best backman); Neil Gibson (most consistent); Luke Browning (best utility); Scott Bonnitcha (most serviceable); Jeremy Cashion (coach's award); Josh Hall (best clubman); Ashley Rhodes and Neil Gibson (best in finals). Medallions were also presented to Nathan Heron, David Banks, Steve Rhodes, Rohan Dishington, Brendon Clayton and Andrew Tomlin. Under 17s: Jeremy Cashion (Club Champion); Shaun Fenton (runner-up); Jacob Wessing (most consistent); Scott Rainbird (best utility); Josh Hall (most serviceable); Rowan Heron (best backman); Ben Triffitt (most improved); Aaron Cashion (coach's award); Brett Booth (best in finals); Mal Geard (appreciation award); Brett Booth (achievement award). The New Norfolk District Football Club's best clubman award went to Mal Geard.
