Lemon is a truly brilliant writer on most things and definitely my favourite since the passing of Matt Price.

He had a blog here...

http://heathenscripture.wordpress.com/

which he sadly hasn't kept going because of work committments.

Even so, it is well worth a read if you enjoy witty, intelligent prose laced with some truly brutal takedowns of people and policies that pissed him off.

Champagne Commentary! Very much the heir apparent to Matt Price.

'The Grapes of Ross' will never leave my head from this moment on.

I am a Grape of Ross! :)

Thanks for sharing, really good read. Pav as Hector is quite apt, valiant hero in a losing side, honoured by his army and his opponents alike.

Great article, except the part where they forgot to mention that we only won the game because of questionable umpiring that turned it in our favour (so says the Geelong and Main Board).

A bonza read - delightful and incomparable in equal measure., as all great writing should be.

What's even rarer, it was penned by a football writer with both a brain, and seemingly, a classical education;

That is the rarest of creatures - we should have him stuffed and mounted. :D

In Freo after a bye they should have been fresh and firing. For most of the game they stayed on level terms, but the first-quarter freeze killed them. With Freo’s recent form, the Cats needed to win that one.

guess you don’t watch much footy, most teams struggle after byes, especially first quarters. Great in theory only.

You’re right, I don’t watch much footy. I just write the columns as an elaborate ruse.

He is heavily involved in promoting writing, and the spoken word, for young people via workshops, competitions and the like. He is also involved in various literary festivals in the Eastern States and comes to WA on occasions. He speaks as well as he writes, if not better, which is quite something. If you get a chance, do not miss one of his talks.

Writing about the footy is just a sideline for him, but he is very knowledgable. Some of his more whimsical stuff about life in general, and his reactions to it, are nothing other than brilliant. His humour is sharp as a mother in laws tongue and few in modern writing can rip someone/thing to shreds in the manner by which he does.

Freo fans may not be as fond of him if they read some of his burnings of us when we were shit, however he was spot on and it was richly deserved.

Of course, Roar Guru is actually right. The majority of teams have lost after a bye (in the modern era).

Gene is a particularly one-eyed and self-righteous Geelong supporter. I've lost count of the times he has told me on that site that I don't know what I am talking about. Not as annoying as the Swans fans who lurk there though. They have no idea, other than that the inclusion of Buddy makes them the best AFL team eva and the premiership is in the bag. Oh and that Freo reaching the GF last year was a sheer fluke caused by mass injuries to every other team in the league.

Lemon's the co-editor of a little literary magazine called Going Down Swinging. I heard him speak on a panel at a young writers festival once about writers and taking drugs. The guy is one of these lucky bastards whose synapses fire even better when wasted. Anyway, good read.

He's very gonzo.

Vale Hunter S. :(

That doesn't take into account whether a team is genuinely better or not. If the bye was so detrimental I can't imagine why teams try so hard in the Qualifying finals
This is from the punting board...
A very simplistic analysis. Make of it what you will.

I have seen the line (or At the spread) stats and they tell a similar story, in that teams underperform coming off a bye.

I guess the difference in QFs is that they are at the end of a season (moree recovery is better) and it also provides a chance for coaches to dedicate extra time to analysis.
