Soccer is the sleeping giant
Cricket is the national sport
which is bigger in this country?

Neither get anyone to go to the top league in this country.
The crowds come out to both for serious international games.
Registered players? who has more?
Junior players? who has more?
Which is watched more on TV?

You make some very valid points there, which tips the scales 'soccer's' way.

However, cricket is part of the Aussie psyche. It's culture. I don't like cricket much but I still go to the boxing day test. I think that's the same for many others. Cricket is pretty much our national identity.

they've been saying that for the last 50 years.

Cricket would be be 10 times more popular than boring-ball in Australia.
