6. Tom Williams (Bulldogs) - Can't help think this is very high for a kid whose best game was in the QAFL reserves and who can't kick. Can only help but think that Jordan Lewis was the player they needed.

7. Jordan Lewis (Hawks) - Considering that they took 5 big blokes I would have thought they'd want to recruit at least one guy with pace. I would haev thought that with Mitchell, Ries, Hodge and Sewell they didn't really need another centreman.

16. Adam Pattison (Richmond) - They must think that Pattison is going to be a mobile, around-the-ground ruckman. Passing on Wood seems a strange one considering how much they need a ruckman.

18. Cameron Wood (Brisbane) - Keating, McDonald, Charman and McLaren. Last year they took Spaanderman top-20. I suppose he was too good to pass on but you'd guess that someone is going to be traded next year.

19. Ryan Willits (Port) - they have basically declared themselves the Big Unit club. With Chaplin last year, added to guys like Primus, Tredrea, Brogan and Lade. Some clubs seem nervous about those very big bodies, but not Port.

40. Ivan Maric (Adelaide) - Considering they allready had taken Meesan and Gibson did they really need to take a 3rd ruckman / forward?

58. Brad Moran (Kangaroos) - I allways thought that Hale and McIntosh were the future but they added another ruckman. Perhaps they are a bit nervous about the 2 they have.

I'm not sure how others saw it but WCE recruiting manager Trevor Woodhouse called it a "pretty strange draft". It was reported over here that Jordan Lewis at 7 was a minor shock to a lot of people. I find it hard to believe that they traded up to 7 to take Lewis. I think they had to change their plans after being forced to take Buddy Franklin with their previous pick. I think the Hawks reached on just about every pick they had.

Nothing to do with Hale and McIntosh IMO Weaver. Hale will be a forward who can play ruck if needed. Hamish is the better ruckman of the two, but again, was drafted as a forward and can play there if needed.

Port and Brisbane just played in a GF, and between them have about 67 ruckman.

I have no problems at all getting another tall, especially one who can run a quicker 20 metres than Daniel Wells.

Ports pick 11. Adam Thompson. I don't know anything about him, but it was a surprise to me when his name was called. Perhaps Adelaide taking Meeson over Wood as well.

Not that surprising really. Clarke is 30, Biglands is 28 and Hudson is 26 and very raw. Meesen was a little unexpected bonus because we thought he would get picked up earlier. If Meesen not there @ 8 we would have gone for Wood.

With our current crop of ruckman nearing or over 30 then its not big surprise that we picked up Maric @ 40. I am more surprised that Maric was there to pick @ 40.

We see Chad Gibson as a KPP not a ruckman. We will most probably play him as a defender.

Out of interest Weaver how do you rate our picks over all?

8: Meesen
24: Van Berlo
28: Gibson
40: Maric
56: Chris Knights

Cheers

Yeah, as above, at 195cm Gibson is surely more of a KPP than a ruckman.

Meesen and Maric are the two ruckmen.

Weaver assigned that pair to Essendon in one of the mock drafts. So what's so strange about Adelaide taking both?

Agree this is a bit of a risk, especially so early. Would want to have the ability to learn adequately. Considering North took a similar risk with Moran at 58, 6 seems a fair bit to play for another newbie to the game.

I was initially disgruntled with this selection, but I'm now rather please. We do desperately need some pace, and whilst this guy isn't blistering, he got a decent score on the 20m sprint. Mature body eases any concerns of whether he will put on bulk (ala Steven Greene) and his stats are terribly impressive. Time will tell, but if this guy can transfer his game to the AFL and gain a yard or two, we have a good player.

Was suprised we didn't go for a Monfries or a Meeson (despite wanting a mid).

Hamish has no endurance base and is rubbish.
i laugh when i read north supporters talk him up.
hes played mostly port melb reserves..

he will never make it for anything if he cant make it as a forwaRD... a shocking beep test at draft camp... because he has tiny lungs and a big body does not mean he will be a gun.

Haven't really seen alot of Hamish in the past 12 month have you?

No, I thought not.

Im not going to call them mistakes but Tom Williams and Jordan Lewis look abit iffy to go so high.

Especially Williams, he can't kick....even if his life depended on it he would not be able to. Lewis however, will be a very good player IMO, but still was not good enough to be taken at Pick 7

On the Channel 10 Draft Show Pattison was asked who he went for and he said 'Hawks, but now Tigers' and then they asked him was it hard to change clubs and replied with 'Nah it was easy' :D You beauty!!!

Lewis is a very good player. However i doubt he has a scope of improvement some of the other lads have. He also looks to not be overly pacy, more so in and under.

With Hodge / Mitchell / Lewis the Hawks seem to be tuff as nails but a tad slow and not much run.

'We are going to win the premiership', didn't ya know?

Ya.

All tigers fans reckon our 17 year olds will win the flag next season.

yep this was probably the biggest surprise of the draft for me. i thought he was taken at least 1 round too early. Choco said on ch10 they really wanted an SA boy but there were 2 quality SA mids available to them in Meyer and Monfries. I'm certain they could have got Thomson at 19 if not 34.

Spot on. He is pretty slow and his size wont be as much of an advantage against men. Value at late teens but not at 7.

Surprised the Hawks panicked when their bluff on Tambling was called. They should have stuck with Meeson. 1 mistake is better than 2.

Lewis is pretty slow, you have to be joking 3.03 for the 20 metres at the draft camp. Agree he is not super quick but pretty slow give me a break

I would rather have a kid that can get the ball than a speedy squib

Played against men in the Hampden GF and only picked up 29 possesions, not his usual 30+ perhaps you are right

You could probably add De Luca to the Big Unit Club. At 203cm and 97kg at 18, he could easily go up to the 110kg mark when he finishes growing!

I think Essendon's choices are strange and interesting. No Victorian players. Three SA players who were basically ignored by Crows/Power. Picking Henry Slattery who was not rated by most SA pundits in their top 15 chances. Left field stuff.
The players who were not drafted makes an interesting list particulary those many had as round 1 and 2 picks. Will make the rookie draft just as interesting as the draft proper. Perhaps a thread discussing these and why they were overlooked would be an interesting topic especially the views of Weaver and GoaldenHawk.

All recruiters said they would pick on basis of best available.

Do we know of any club that did not pick on the basis of need
