The panthers have always been my second team & would love to pour over their history much in the same way we are doing with the Peckers.

AH: I have asked for the 79 GF side on the Woody thread, perhaps here would be more appropriate.

Some great names from the past come to mind.

Alf Skuse, Lindsay Backman, Schmidt, Darley, Soapy etc.

Also the champs from the 70's. Always admired Mousley - did he ever play state? Hawkins. Ron Hately - racked up possesions. Slattery. Baynes. Wayne Carty (grrrr...). Stewie Palmer etc.

Thanks

FF - Bennett; Linke; Collins
HF - Harradine; Schneebichler; Fry
C - White; Slattery; Butler
HB - Mousley; Palmer; Earl
FB - Keam; Brooksby; Clarke;
Ruck - Hines; Baynes; Cox
Inter - Hawkins; Bell

IIRC Ron Hateley was out injured with busted ankle.

Gary Mousley played 215 games from 1970 to 1982. 212 games were with South Adelaide and 3 were with Sturt. He never played state football.

The Panthers are responsible for one of my earliest footy memories, the 1964 Grand Final. Although I was too young to appreciate it at the time, it was one of SANFL's greatest moments. Neil Kerley coming over from West Adelaide to Coach and taking them from bottom to top in one season is mind boggling stuff.

Some memories of that era were the brilliant David "Soapy" Kantilla. Still one of the best three aboriginal footballers I ever saw, I've heard stories of South bringing him down to play and having to hold him down to put boots on him. Don't know if it's true, but it's a good story.

Alf Skuse, the racehorse. Talk about speed, I would think he was as quick over 20-30 metres as any player playing today. Bob Schmidt was a wonderful half back flanker, and Lindsay Backman excellent up forward.

Peter Darley was a magnificent player, the original "Jumbo Prince". His battles with the great Bill Wedding were something to see. Darley was red hot favourite for the 64 Magarey Medal after having won every media award in town, but finished 2 votes behind the winner, Geof Motley.

He did his knee in 1965 causing him to miss all of that year and some of 1966 but he came back bigger and better than ever. Certainly bigger. Darley was infamous for his flamboyant lifestyle and was never as fit as what he perhaps should have been, but a great player nonetheless.

South were also responsible for my drunkest memory at the footy ... the 1979 Grand Final. Blowing a gale and raining all day, we hit the members bar early and ended up wetter on the inside than most were on the outside.

The next day I was at a BBQ and South rover Phil Cox was there. All day the Port fans were giving him hell about South only kicking 3 goals for the game. Coxy took it all in good spirits ... at least I think he did.

Still ... great memories.

I have just added Haydn Bunton Jr to Legends of SANFL, although South Adelaide is just a small part of the story.

My 2 fav Panthers, David Stoeckel and Steven Schmid, seemingly always FF and CHF one week, CHB and FB the next. I recall Stoeckel nailing 5 in 7 mins one week to nail a South win 1 week in the early 90's too(might have been against Roosters)

That '79 GF - decided by the coin toss

Other of me faves - Mark Coombe & Sneezer. Who was the big ruckman they had - unpronouncable name, hairy shoulders....think he did an ad foe a bank/building society.

Never saw Soapy play, but saw Darls bag 8 vs Woodies at Adelaide Oval in '74 as a fat, very unfit full forward - but still possessed all that football nous. Always my favourite opposition player.

Mark Caesarowicz? I know he worked in the banking industry.

Phil Cox was telling me a very funny story about Caesarowicz. He was known as "Caesar", and he went prematurely thin on top. However, his body compensated by sprouting a luxurious growth of hair on his shoulders.

He was running around the field one day when a spectator yelled from the boundary, "Hey Caesar, your toupee has slipped from your head to your shoulders". Coxy said he was laughing so hard he couldn't concentrate on the footy.

I was a South supporter for about 2 weeks when I was 4 y.o in Port Augusta. My friend followed South and our favourite player was Stewart Palmer. In playing footy in the backyard we couldn't agree who would be Stewie....so I would be Stewart and he would be Palmer ("Stewart kicks it to Palmer who lays it off to Stewart....PALMMMMEEEER !!!!!" :) .

When I found t he followed South because his Mum wouldn't let him follow Port because "they started all the fights" then I knew the magpies were for me and never looked back.

South Adelaide was a foundation member of the SAFA in 1877 and won the premiership in its inaugural season. Since Port Adelaide joined the AFL in 1997 and replaced by the Port Adelaide Magpies, it can be said South are the only foundation club left in the competition. Norwood didn't join until the following season in 1878.

I wonder how many people knoew South Adelaide wore Geelong style jumpers from 1956 to 1959.

Thank you! I knew they wore Geelong style jumpers I just wasn't sure of the exact years. I picked up a great mag from Gerry recently which has a great photo of Jim Deane in one of these jumpers.

just off on a tangent, didnt norwood wear melbourne style jumpers for a while?

Yes they did, When Alan Killigrew took over as Coach he adopted the Melbourne style jumper and called the club the Demons. Strange move for a God fearing devout Catholic such as Killa.

I think they reverted back to their original style and did away with the red yoke on the jumper in 1965 when Haydn Bunton took over as Coach. I recall reading an article from Haydn Bunton asking the media and public to refer to Norwood as the Redlegs, not the Demons.

The 1965 Mobil Footy Photos depict Norwood players in Melbourne style jumpers. The pictures would have been taken pre-season. I began watching Norwood in 1965 and have only seen them in the contemporary style without the red yoke.

Which magazine was that, and any chance of posting the pic? I've never seen any pictures of South players in those jumpers.

Oh, technologically challenged one - you know that Legends of SANFL would be the rightful home of such a picture!

South Adelaide ruckmen

Peter Darley - the champion of them all
Robb Hawkins - quality 70's player
Robert Doyle - recruited form South Melbourne
Bob Ball - 60's ruckman
Haydn Cutting - Reserves star who wasn't quite the real deal
Peter Hines - solidly built, recruited from Footscray(?)
Frank Spiel - went on to be a star at Sturt

Mark Coombe - briliant wingman who had to retire early due to injury, then became a league umpire.
Bill Bennett - tough and brilliant, played in Carlton's 1968 premiership team.
David Young - returned to Souht after stints with South Melbourne, Collingwood and starring in "The Club" as Tony Harper
Craig Co ck - defender turned ETSA executive who gets the blame every time the power black outs.
Terry Goodwin - hard nosed wingman and father of Crows player Simon.
Graham Robbins - rover from Richmond who captained the club.
Eddie Fry - quality performer who could play most set positions
Andy Bennett - brilliant ruckman who went to Hawthorn but never showed his best due to constant injuries, then to St.Kilda, went to coach in Tasmania, then West Torrens before the merger.
Mark Naley - great rover and member of Carlton's 1987 premiership team. Was deafter to Footscray after returning to SA but didn't go back to Victoria to play.

Just a few there from the 1970s.

Caeser... yep, that was him.

How many years did Kerls spend with South, and does anyone know the story behind how he got there. Bit of a coup for the Panthers committee.

Hadyn Cutting. Much in the Jim Brenton mould. You could never play 'em in a strong wind!

Neil Kerley coached the Panthers from 1964 to 1966. I don't know of any other reason Kerley coached South except opportunity. Kerley had coached West Adelaide in 1961 & 1962, two grand finals for 1 premiership. Then for some reason the West Adelaide club sacked him as coach. He remained on with the club as a player only in 1963.

South Adelaide were unhappy with Bill Sutherland's training methods and sacked him late in 1963 amd appointed Denis Parham as care-taker coach. Then the day after West had been beaten by North Adelaide in the 1st Semi Final, South Adelaide offered Kerley the job.

Kerley accepted the position but West Adelaide refused to clear him as a player, as they also had with Ken Eustice who had been appointed Coach of Central District.

After ill-feeling between the two parties, West finally cleared him to South where he played his first match against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Round 7. South won that game by 14 points and the rest is history.

....to be replaced by.... Doug Thomas! In the words of Gomer Pyle - "Surprise, surprise, surprise!"

Wasn't money the reason given?

Maybe, but I think history recalls it was a very poor decision by the Blood 'n' Tars.
Absolutely!

Another link between the Blood 'n' Tars coaching position and South Adelaide - Bob Keddie. Why did he move - did he see that Westies were rubbish? He did alright playing wise at South - made the State side.

And finished up at Glenelg. I'll always remember Keddie more for his final quarter for the Hawks in the 1971 GF :)
