Speedy Bartel

I really like James Bartel as a player and hopes he has a great season this year and cements a permanent spot in the team. He's hard at it and puts his head over the ball but I was a bit surprised by a comment made by Bomber Thompson talking about the arrival of Kane Tenace on the Geelong Website :


Coach Mark Thompson couldn't hide his delight at snaring the exciting onballer and said he's capable of playing 10 senior games in 2004.

"He's fast and exciting and a good ball user, I've watched his tape and no-one ever tackled him because he was running away from them and he just adds something that we haven't got a lot of,'' Thompson said.

"The blokes with the genuine speed, and Ablett's got speed, Bartel's quite quick although he doesn't play quick, Judd, those types of boys seem to be able to play pretty quickly, and Kane's quick.


I see pretty much every Geelong game but never get to any training sessions. I was just wondering if Bartel is really as quick as Bomber points out (i.e in time trial sprints etc) and if so how is it possible to be quick yet not play quick.

I was just curious as to why he would name Bartel in the pacy category ahead of other midfielders who would appear to be quicker. Any thoughts?

Compared to some of our other midfielders, JB is one player who does take a bit more time, (and care) with his disposal, which might explain why Bomber said he doesn't play quick.
