Gilham throws his weight into challenge

STEPHEN "Splinter" Gilham doesn't know if he will be able to shrug off his nickname.

While the branding seemed appropriate when Gilham arrived at Alberton as a 75kg teenager in November 2002, he is working furiously to change it.

It is the athleticism and crisp skills for a man of 191cm which Gilham hopes will propel him into the Power's best 22. And with Stephen Paxman gone and fellow key backmen Darryl Wakelin and Matthew Bishop nearing 30, Gilham is eyeing his opening.

"He took me under his wing and taught me a lot," Gilham said of Paxman.
