Split/Second

Split/Second, an intense action racing game set within the world of a hyper-competitive reality television show. Competitors vie to be the first across the finish line in a made-for-TV city built for destruction, with the ultimate goal of becoming the season champion. Competitors in Split/Second don't just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track -- they can also trigger explosive events that drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use strategy and pinpoint timing to derail opponents, tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes.
Also has online multiplayer and has been described as a melding of Death Race and Burnout.

Im looking forward to this one, looks like it could be a little different with a bit more of an arcade feel to it.

Really excited about this game ever since I saw gameplay from the Shipyard track. Definitely on my radar.

I must admit, that does look quite cool but there would have to be enough things to do in it so you don't have every race ending in a bridge collapse or water spurt.

An interesting game for Disney to be producing though.

That's the issue I can see with the game. Unless there's a TON of things to blow up, exploit, etc. and they dynamically change up if/when you can do it through different races then it could become really repetitive in how it plays out.

My fave racing game this gen has actually been GTA Races in GTA IV. Despite the lag at times it played out differently every time and I loved it. You'd get a bunch of different tactics and with things like weapons being able to be used there would always be that dynamic gameplay throughout the race.

If Split/Second is like that with a ton of dynamic changes throughout races then I'll be very happy.

every time i see a trailer for it i get more and more excited, anyone know when it might be coming out?

Not listed on the ebgames or JB websites, so I'm not sure about the AUS release date, but it's being released May 18th in the US, so it'll most likely be around then.

Demo hit Xbox Live marketplace today. Definitely gonna give it a download when I get home.

Disney Interactive Studios announced today that a demo of Split/Second, the upcoming kick-ass action racing game from Black Rock Studio, is available now via Xbox LIVE. The demo allows players to experience the Airport Terminal level in race mode. Players will race through a fictional airport terminal taking out opponents by triggering events, such as bringing down the air traffic control tower and a remotely piloted cargo plane, in a race to the finish line.

The Split/Second demo will be available exclusively on Xbox LIVE until May 11, when it will also become available on PSN.

Completed a few races and I have to say this game definitely has the goods to deliver. It played completely different every time. The track can be altered in lots of ways. You can change courses permanently or create temporary shortcuts just for you to use which then shut off and wreck your opponents which definitely adds replayability to try and find all the other options available. The opponents also activate power plays too, so you're not safe either, whether they're big ones or small ones, such as changing the course entirely or dropping a bomb on you.

It definitely makes for a very exciting driving game, bringing back memories from Burnout: Takedown and improving on them. It's made a big impression on me and it's a definite buy.

Great review Noppo, can't wait for the game to come out.

Played the demo myself today and the course can be changed in more than a few ways like Noppo said, with shortcuts or by changing a route alltogether, or you can just enjoy simply smashing up the car in front of you by making a bus explode over the track lol(i managed to crash into the buses myself a couple of times )

In one game i made a whole building explode, in the next i changed the course twice and had 3 exploding vehicles wreck a few opponents, in the third i made a huge ass plane crash down on top of everyone while narrowly missing it myself and thats after i changed the course twice during the race, and managed to use a shortcut near the end to win me the race lol.

You have a bar behind your car (cut into 3rds) that builds up when you draft or drift(the drifting seems pretty good and works well) that allows you to do either a level 1 powerplay(using 1/3 of the bar), which is things exploding on the track to wreck cars in front of you or useing a shortcut ect.
Or a level 2 powerplay(using 3/3) which involves changing the course, blowing buildings, making a flippin 747 land on ya noggin ect.

Fun game to play but its longevity just might not be there imo (thats only after playing the demo, and i have said that about other games and im still playing them ) but in saying that i had real fun plaing it i WILL still be picking it up cause the online will def keep you entertained untill GT5 comes out in 2018

Haha, saw you playing the demo Sacka and realised that the store had updated so I have just finished the download (went SUPER fast, 1MB a second quite easily, 752MB d/l was done in under 10 minutes) so am just about to give it a go once my UFC demo has installed.

Looks the goods and can't wait to try it out.

Pretty good demo and basically agree with what Sacka and Noppo said. Although I still don't know if it's a definite buy.

There's a few things that could be improved. When you're in first there's no huge incentive to actually BE in first. Some power points for being in the lead would be good otherwise your best place to be is 2nd, really.

Also it'd be nice if there were different things you could do to get different power play points or something. Like bumping into cars, trying to push them out of the way and such getting you points to use. Instead of just the 2 ways to get points.

Maybe having a more divided system in how to use the points as well.

But it was a pretty fun demo. I had the plane used by someone else on me in the race and I wasn't paying a huge amount of attention to the course, then suddenly I see a HUGE ****ING PLANE coming right towards me and just managed to sneak out of the way in time. But it was a sight to see. Many of the powerplays are awesome to see, even after a few times seeing them.

I agree to with you Sacka that there might just not be a huge amount of longevity in the game. Once you've seen all there is to see in each level it could become a bit mundane. It would definitely take quite a while (at a guess, maybe 30+ hours), but after that, would there still be more to gain out of the game? Then again, normal racers don't change a thing during their tracks and people still come back time and time again. So maybe it doesn't need to.

Yea i totally agree about leading the race, you feel so vulnerable out in front and it would be good if you could still do something to help yourself somehow.
Also im pretty sure you can power up by wrecking cars (i smashed one into a wall and got a bonus i reckon)but i spose there needs to be a balance so you dont forever have your power ar full.
For me it's either this or modnation, and after playing the beta for modnation this shits all over it imo

IGN Ratings for Split/Second (PS3)
Rating Description
out of 10
9.0 Presentation
With some very slick design and a minimal UI that remains functional and cool, Split/Second's presentation is stylish and effective.
9.0 Graphics
Split/Second's visuals make it a point of showing you spectacle like you've never seen it in a racing game before, and the lighting and environments steal the show.
8.5 Sound
While the music wears out its welcome quickly, Split/Second's audio is aggressive and powerful, practically demanding that you play at high volume on a good sound setup.
8.0 Gameplay
Some great kart-style racing mechanics are occasionally undermined by some age-old arcade racer problems, but things remain fun and accessible throughout.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Between the lengthy singleplayer campaign and frantic, constantly shifting multiplayer battles, Split/Second can keep you busy for quite some time.
8.5
