McQualter is a ready made footballer, who has performed exceptionally well in the TAC cup for the past three seasons.

Ackland is the ruckman we need as support for Kosi

McGough has played at the AFL level but still has it all ahead of him. A tough in and under player who will add depth to the midfield.

Gwilt is a winger who has played for Noble Park - remains the smokey of the draft as no-one had considered him (except the guru)

Gwilt played in Nobles premiership tem in the EFL and won best on ground in the grand final. Hes got good pace about and a raking left foot kick, ver good skills and footy brain.

i think we did exceptionally well considering the picks other teams had before us and our picks! Well Done Again Bevo!

I'm happy with our choices but very surprised at the acquisition of Ackland at 33.

Would I have traded 33 for him? No, and I while I'm more than happy to have taken him, I think we could have milked another quality kid at this pick.

That Ivan Maric and Fabian Deluca were still availiable, well, it's slightly tough to swallow.

Still, I'd rather be with Ackland than without him.

I think it would have been a tactical blunder to not go for depth at this time.
Most other teams are rebuilding, whilst we are at 11.35 on the "Malthouse clock".

Whilst we are no longer the most youthful team, we still have abundant young talent coming through.

The decision to opt for depth has met with limited success with other teams (with the exception of Brisbane), but that should not deter us as this is clearly the time to do it. Our older players have one or a few seasons left in them, our youthful players have just started to fulfil their potential.

The team just needs to increase its depth to cover for injuries and to make players more accountable for their selection (when you have two or three players desperate for your spot - you tend to get the best out of yourself)

We have a window of about two or three more years before we have to return to the youth policy again. By that time, Hawthorn, Richmond and the Bulldogs will be peaking. They will be trying to compete with an experienced, hardened St Kilda team. If all goes to plan, we will be the "Brisbane" of that era.

In order to sustain our success, first we have to attain success - this is the prime objective now, later we will need to supplement our list with a few more young stars using the (then) successful Beveridge recruitment policy.

we needed to fill the holes that were left, or never there

I agree to a certain extent that you should opt for depth considering the position you are in, but don't agree with taking recycled players with your 2nd and 3rd picks.

Personally I would have thought that taking a young ruckman at 33 would have been the best bet. You have an awesome list, but do lack some young ruck prospects and at this stage, DeLuca and Maric were available.

Perhaps if you took Maric or Deluca at 33 and then a recycled player at 49 (Ackland or McGough) ? Thoughts ?

I thought we were a chance of picking up Cam Wood with our first pick, but clearly Beveridge didn't want to risk losing McQualter then he cut everyone else out of the picture by picking up the two recycled players and even then could have picked up Bain, but didn't - he grabbed Gwilt and left it at that.

Each pick was made in seconds, so it all went to plan - it appears no other options were considered.
