St Kilda vs Carlton Preview

Last time they met: Carlton – 15.11.101 def by St Kilda – 16.15.111

Carlton’s first game under Ratten saw a vast improvement in their performance, which wasn’t hard after the hiding they copped from Brisbane in the week prior that was the catalyst in Pagan getting the flick. The mighty blues came up short in a match that should be remembered for Fev’s brilliant contender for goal of the year in which he ferociously chased down his St Kilda opponent then launched a boomer from inside the centre square that bounced through.

The Form

Well where do we start with the Blues?? After a pre season of hype about Judd and the inability of Fev to find a public toilet, the Blues had a disappointing loss to Richmond. A combination of poor skills, lack of fitness not to mention a couple of key players missing saw Richmond run out 30 point winners. The positives of Judd having an impact with limited game time, Murphy playing a blinder and Stevens getting through after a horrific injury were outweighed by some players (who will remain nameless………except Thornton) still not being able to hit a target.
St Kilda got off to a bolter of a start against St Kilda and looked like going on with it until Sydney settled into their “Id rather watch paint dry than this crap” boring style and dragged them down with them. Id actually like to say more about this game however it was just that boring I’m leaving it at St Kilda just got over the line. Seriously that’s it, f%&*#ng Roos and his lock down style of play………. I’d rather watch lawn bowls.

The Game

Carlton will be the raging underdogs coming into this match and with good reason. Judd and Stevens who will form the nucleus of a potent midfield are still at about 70% fitness meaning the likes of Scotland, Murphy and Simpson will carry a big load on their shoulders. The return of Fisher will add a much needed target alongside Fev up forward and the fact we will have two ruckman in the exciting Hampson and the hard working Cloke, means that Irish can stay down back and help out Waite and Thornton in combating the Saints deadly forward duo of St Nick and Kosi.

St Kilda’s on ball brigade of Dal Santo, Banger, Montagna and Hayes delivering to Riewoldt, Kosi and friends combined with the run of Fisher and Gram from half back could be too much for the young Blues to handle. If Waite can hold down Riewoldt and the young blue brigade can step up and hit Fev and Fisher on the lead they are a chance.

The Mighty Blues will shake the heavens but not hard enough for the Saints to fall.

Nice preview.

On the Saints, i was lucky enough to see the last 2 quarters game on TV here in Holland (hopefully they'll show Carlton soon) as although it was obviously a low scoring encounter the last 2 quarters were played at a fast pace, and some of StKilda's skills were awesome, which is very worrying.

But were i think we can expose StKilda is the ruck, with the return of Hampson, his mobility should kill both Gardner and King, who aren't athletic and are both more injury prone than Fisher.

So Hampson in conjunction with Cloke need to run these two ragged and expose them up forward....this obviously giving Fev a hand with the extra men that Ross Lyon will play in front of Fev.

If we make good use of the ruck work, our mids should get more clearences and with better delivery (i hope) than last week (Qtr 3 & 4) into Fev, Fisher and Edwards we could stretch them this way.

In saying that our backline who were IMO fantastic last week will have their hands full with Reiwoldt, Kosi & Milne. I don't think Fraser will play so i expect Jones to comeback into the team off the emergency list. If we can have Waite, Jammo, Setanta all play on their big men i think we could match them.

In previous games its always been Fraser and Milne that kill us, so we really need to take them down as i expect our mids to at least come eve if not win that battle.

Should be interesting to see how the Blues respond after the fade out from round one, i'm sure Judd and co. don't want to repeat that effort and instead come out and prove that they can play 4 quarters.

Just mucking around with the match ups. ;)

The Saints have selected a top heavy squad if they're going to play Koschitzke, Riewoldt and Gehrig close to goal.

What role will Blake play this week when King and Gardiner will do the majority of the ruck work?

Playing rucks as forwards never works.

Thank God that little mongrel Baker isn't playing to tag Judd because it would be great to see the two midfields go head to head.

I hope we're not going to tag Dal Santo or Harvey with Bannister.

That will get ugly.

How does St Kilda's midfield usually line up in games with Harvey, Ball, Hayes and Dal Santo?

Hopefully Kade gets a slower opponent and can have a big game this week, but Montagna will probably play on him to match his run.

One thing I must say is:

Gehrig, Kosi, Riewoldt, Milne, Shneider, X. Clarke ....

thats one pretty scarey forward line.
Too right, it just makes it more essential for us to win the ball from the ruck, another scary thought...

fair pont that hampson and cloke need to use their mobility and run,
but we need them to be winning ruck contests and at worst breaking even in ruck contests otherwise hampson and cloke will be using their mobility to chase opponents all day.

blake has previously been used for run with roles- he might get a crack at judd at soem stage, especiallyu with not being 100% nad still lacking his speed off the mark.

It's not as scary as Fisher, Fevola, Russell, Betts, Edwards and Houlihan. :)

We might kick 15 goals if Fevola bags eight.
Schneider would be too quick and agile for Bower i must say!! Maybe scotland and Bower can swap!!
Because Scotland is accountable and did a great job playing wide of Dale Thomas two years ago? ;)
