McCabe played 39 Tests for Australia as a batsman averaging 48.21. He also took 36 wickets at 42.86 apiece.
The speed of McCabes run scoring was a feature of his game. In 1930 Tests, Bradman scored at 3.7 runs per 6 balls faced and McCabe at 4.1.
Neville Cardus wrote that McCabe was in the Victor Trumper line and that 'no other batsman but McCabe had inherited Trumper's sword and cloak'.
McCabe was an extremely powerful hitter of the ball. He was predominately a back foot player.
Of his 6 centuries, his most memorable were his 187 not out against England in the first Bodyline test of 1932/33; his 189 not out aginst south Africa at Johannesberg in 1935/36; and his 232 at Nottingham in the first Ashes test of 1938. His 232 came in 235 minutes, hitting 34 fours and a six. Bradman called out other team members to the balcony saying 'Come and see this. Don't miss a moment of it. You will never see the like of it again'.
