It seems many of us including myself may have overrated young Brent Stanton. At the end of last year I even went as far as saying he could become one of the elite midfielders of the afl in the mould of a Robert Harvey. Heck I even made the ridiculous comment that he could win a Brownlow. How wrong I was

I will say he does have a future with us and he trys hard however he will never join the competitions elite midfielders. Time and time again he chooses the wrong option creating in turnovers and sloppy pieces of play. The ability to make good decisions and use the ball well probably isnt one that can be taught and Stanton just doesnt seem to have this ability. You only need to look at young first rounders in Mark Murphy and Dale Thomas to see these guys already are smart and take the correct option. Im sick of Stanton consistently running through the middle looking up to a leading player, failing to take the first option and running into troulble giving off a sloppy handball and creating turnovers. He will never be one of the competitions elite but more of a handy midfielder.

Whats everyone elses thoughts?

disco clarky.. my thoughts... lick my balls.. your thoughts on that? you are insulting a player who represents the underlying values of our club (hard work and dedication) if ur a troll you no where to go.. otherwise... join the geelong board.. they are doing a mighty fine job of a circa style 1100AD witch hunt! burning all at the stake... not here mate!

Id happily take him of ur hands under our new "youth policy".

What's changed from the end of last year and the start of this year.

Personally i really think he is a talent that is out of form atm and like to watch him play.

at the moment of course he does not look as good as last year because last year he had alot more help around and was not really recognised. this year opposition sides see him our most dangerous midfielder and they tag. so he is getting less help then last year from senior players and is getting tagged.

give him a chance to learn to handle tagging, get more much needed help from the senior group and i am positive people will realise why he will be a top line midfielder for us.

Hes not even half way through his 3rd season of AFL, got a 3rd in our best and fairest last year(not a top year for our club but still a great acheivment anyway considering the form of some of our senior players last year), many players would love to be travelling as well as him.
It seems many people have no patience to develope young players when you read over this whole forum. Too many expect every young player to be a Chris Judd, and play super footy from the outset.
Sorry people it rarely happens.

I rate him highly. He's an important cog to the future of our club. Brent's been averaging 20 touches per game this year and I'm not going to judge him too critically at this stage.

How quickly everyone forgets his 3rd in the Crichton.

That's if everyone was Disco Clarky.. don't know about you, but i hate the disco.. not so sure about the Clarky... but definantly hate the disco..

take a leaf out of george michaels book and have a bit of faith a faith a faith...pretty ordinary call disco....kids a star in the making....

a very stupid pointless remark.I wish we had 10 stantons to rebuild our side.Get off the perscription pills your doctor told u to take.its not doing u much good for your common sense!

we only have 4-5 players performing this season. Stanton, Lovett-Murray, Hille & Job Watson from memory. So dude, I do not know what you have been smoking but you do indeed need to get off it And quickly

He's been decent this season in the bottom side. See how goes in the 2nd half of the season with hopefully JJ, Hird and Campo back and in form.

Definately has areas of his game to work on but i'm happy with him so far.

Didnt think even wrist durgery would stop you going into bat for your love child! mad one handed post......nice george michael reference too....feather tooth. The Melbourne zoo just called and are apparently missing a lyre bird.....

lets throw a disco ball at clarkys head... if ur a disgruntled supporter fair enough, but dont put down what we have... point out what we dont fair enough.. stanton is got the best work ethic and i wish every kid on our team took his approach.. id like to see lovett who shines when we going ok but losses it when were not.. it will be interesting what he has learnt from his sin bin time... u think he can step up? or continue to shine when we are playing well?

Everyone getting a bit defensive here, Geez Ive pushed a few buttons. If you read what I said I said he would be a player of the future and definately has a place in the team. I just said that perhasps he wont be the elite midfielder that everyone thinks he may be. And I stand by that I think hell be a very good player but definately no champion.

If we are evr going to be a competitive team than Stanton won't be getting a game. His decision making is poor and he turns the ball over. In the Harvey mould? Certainly not. More in the Peverill mode.

Poor comment saying Stanton is overrated. Is very servicable and doing the job in a very poor team. Sure he isnt playing as well as late last year but the team is a lot more ordinary since then which doesnt help.

His disposal isnt great but was much better late last year when he had people leading to him to pass too. Essendon are very stagnant this year and refuse to lead hence why it might look that stanton turns the ball over more often.

will be muc better in later years.

One of our few top picks that we have made over the years.

Aren't you getting just a wee bit carried away ? Has he played 50 games yet ? It didn't take you long to drop off the perch !

totally agree with you there stargazer. i can think of many more afl players who have taken more than 50 games to become elite midfielders. luke hodge only played his 50th game last season and has now found his feet after just over 70 games.

stanton gives more of an effort week in week out than a lot of other blokes down at the club at the moment.
