Couldn't find a thread for this, even after searching.

The beta just was just released for free download and I've been playing it a bit. Definitely an improvement on Warhawk, but it retained some flaws too.

Everything is very well balanced, the vehicles are strong (like the mechs), but can be taken down with the right approach. There are only two maps in the beta (in CTF anyway, it's the best game mode), both are fun to play on, and like in Warhawk, are huge, even when they're described as small in-game.

Unfortunately, the game has adopted Uncharted's bullet-sponge mechanics, where it takes way too long to kill other players. I've had moments where I unloaded my whole clip on someone and didn't kill them (granted, partly due to the fact that it's hard to aim in the game) and it's especially annoying when someone's running away with the flag. Another minor flaw they retained from the previous game was that if you don't work well as a team, you fail. It's almost impossible to single-handedly capture flags in this game, so if your teammates are too stupid to share a vehicle, you're going to lose.

Overall, it looks promising. Certainly far better than other betas I've played. Didn't encounter any real lag issues either, despite playing with seppos and japanese people.

Re: Starhawk (PS3)

i tried the beta a while back when i got ps+

didn't feel any lag whatsoever playing against the japs and i felt the aiming was fantastic!
def takes a tad too long to take an enemy down but that's alright by me due to the type/style of game it is.

doubt i will buy it though...just too slow for my liking.

for people that enjoy battlefield it's basically a 3rd person version based in space.

graphics are also extremely good!

I dunno about that at all. I'd say about 75% of my wins in Warhawk were from me single-handedly going and getting the flag and risking my arse to win.

Was all about tactics and timing, which I absolutely loved. Coming off Resistance: Fall of Man it gave that exact same sense of just waiting for the right moment to make your move.

It's definitely tougher in Starhawk with the whole drop and build system with people setting up their defences in a way that you really have to work a lot slower before going in to the opposition base.

Anyway, onto the beta. I gave it a go when it first came out for PS+, haven't been back since, but will now that there's another map in the rotation.

I quite enjoyed it. The shooting was smooth and precise, there's plenty of unique abilities and graphically it's fantastic.

I'm not a huge fan of taking the Warhawk element out of it more, but it could prove to be a good move as sometimes if there was a Warhawk dominance in the air it became a boring and tough slug of trying to rocket them out while not really being able to attack. I do like the mech element though.

In terms of bullet sponges, well that's to be expected. When you have vehicles that can take people out quickly as it is, your life would be worth nothing if you had even less health.

But when it comes to gun play it is waaaaaaaaaaaaayyy over the top, seriously i was behind someone last week and it took a clip to drop him.

Are there didicated servers?

Warhawk had them, so I'm guessing Starhawk will/might. It does have the server browser (which will be in full effect come release) so that should help.

Not sure how you did it, I always had trouble getting flags in Warhawk unless I had a partner helping. Here it's even harder, because there are turrets everywhere in the bases. There are plenty of ways to get through or destroy the defense, but it usually requires teamwork or a LOT of patience.

As for bullet sponges, as a previous poster said, it's the gunplay where it gets annoying. I remember someone took the flag, and just ran away on foot. I kept trying to shoot him down, absolutely loading him with bullets, but he managed to run off before I could finish him, and by that time, he would have run too far.

There is no lag so yeah, I think there are dedicated servers. Just a useless starting weapon.

Re: Starhawk (PS3)

Absolutely loved Warhawk but i dunno, i just cant seem to get into Starhawk, will try the beta a few more times to see if my opinion changes but sadly its a no buy for me :(

Yeah i'm the same, clocked up 600+ hours in warhawk, but just don't like sh. I've had the beta for a few months and have played it for hours but its just so average. I know that it isn't a direct sequel to wh but i feel that it has lost itself and is a completely different game. Here i was expecting it to be my next shooter for the next few years like wh, but at this stage i very much doubt i'll even buy it :(

IGN gave it a 9. Seem to be very impressed with the MP, calling it the best multiplayer exclusively on the PS3. Not so impressed with the the SP though.

Like its protagonist, Starhawk is a half-breed, something out of the ordinary and against tradition. It picks up the narrative slack on the battlefield, where a simple strategy system is an inspiring spin on the third-person shooter. This hybrid form of thinking and shooting has a layered depth that comes completely to life in multiplayer, where building a fortress to protect a flag is as fun as flying headlong into the enemy’s HQ. Combining these gameplay elements seems so obvious that, in hindsight, it’s a wonder it’s taken this long to take off. The defining factors of Starhawk will, in all likelihood, garner a strong community to support it for years. Deservedly so: This is multiplayer at its finest, and it’s among the best you’ll find on any platform

6.0 Presentation
Cool-looking comic book cutscenes do what they can for a limp story.

8.5 Graphics
There's great visual diversity in the pretty settings plus some nice explosions and effects.

8.0 Sound
There's a ton of great action sounds at any given moment and a killer soundtrack.

9.5 Gameplay
It's awesome to summon structures, build bases, and go on the attack in powerful vehicles. This is a smart shooter that understands what makes games fun.

9.5 Lasting Appeal
Unlockable skills and cosmetic customiztion are novelty perks to a multiplayer experience you won't want to let go of.

OVERALL 9.0

8.5 for graphics!??

in the beta it looked freakon stunning!

sounds like the final product is very good but my god i was bored in the beta...(doesn't help i played it so late at night though) but it was soooooooo slow paced and the fact you have to unlock the starhawks or whatever the reason was they weren't available is annoying cause it takes so freakon long to get from one relevant place on the battlearena to another...

does look like it would be brilliant but i thought warhawk was overrated so it's a pass for me

Hearing that there are some serious balancing issues for the MP. Overpowered vehicles and spawn-kills seem to be irritating a lot of players. Still looks good, but I'll only get it if there's a big patch or a price drop.

Don't bother, sp story is boring as bat shit, and im getting one shot killed when im in a tank to at least 3 shots to kill them, + its just not that fun to play.
