Where does Shaun Burgoyne rank in terms of oldest players to kick 2+ goals in a game?

He's easily the oldest Hawthorn player to do it.

One for the statisticians:
Have there ever been any players with over 250 games who have a lower goals per game ratio (0.012) or Brownlow votes to games ratio (0.004)?

For the record, The AFL Record Season Guide lists Morris as the player with the most games for the lowest possible total of career votes, so after the weekend just gone his record would now extend by one game: 242 home and away games for one vote, same ratio of 0.004.

Ok.ok.

When was the last time two matches played at exactly the same time have the exact same score?
87-60 obviously.

The same scores in two matches in a round has happened 12 times in all. On eight occasions it happened on the same day, seven of those when both games were played concurrently.

2019 R19 - 87 v 60 https://afltables.com/afl/seas/2019.html#19

Worthy of mention was this pair of matches played a few hours apart.

Rod Carter is the only player with fewer career goals after 253 matches (1). Next lowest after Morris are Vic Thorp (7), Darren Glass (8) and John Rantall (10). Heath Shaw is the next lowest among current players (39 goals, 22nd on the list).

I've got Morris with 239 eligible games. As far as I can tell, he has received the least votes after that number of games. Next lowest is 4 to Shane Wakelin, 5 for Heath Grundy (after receiving a vote on debut!) and 6 to Darryl Wakelin, Brent Guerra and Michael Firrito.

Jock McHale (261) was the only player to play 239+ games prior to the institution of the Brownlow. Vic Thorp played 263 total games for 1 vote, but only 32 of those were voting matches, and under the early system only one vote was awarded per match, for BOG (so it was effectively 3 votes).

Yes, 239 is correct. I was confused by the total displayed in my most recent copy of The AFL Record Season Guide, which is the 2018 edition. On page 620 Morris is listed under the heading Most Games With Only One Brownlow Vote. The total games given is 241, which at that stage of his career (the end of 2017) included 14 finals.

Very good Ron - so at least I can say it was the first time this happened in my lifetime - I thought it was unusual! More than 50 years since the last one.

Interesting that most of the occurrences are clustered within 14 seasons (1955-1968). Of course now not that many games are played at the same time, but there were plenty of years after 1968 when many games were played at the same time - although scoring was obviously a lot higher in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s so less chances of exact score matches lining up.

Isn't this the lowest scoring year since 1968? (Actually having checked I see it is 1967). Maybe we're in line for another cluster of same score matches (at least in the same round).

There seemed to be a lot of smothers in today's Lions V Dogs game- especially in the first quarter and given it was a dry day.

Anyone got smother stats? Most by a team, player, in a match combined.

I think there'd be a strong correlation between high smothering teams and winning.

What’s the most inaccurate draw ever?

North Adelaide Glenelg in the sanfl just drew at 4.15.39 each
Aggregate scoring accuracy - drawn game (bottom/top 3):
24.44%
(11 goals 34 behinds) - 1921 Rd. 4:
720567

27.78% (10 goals 26 behinds) - 1897 Rd. 7:
720565
^ This is the most inaccurate game where both teams had the exact same score.

28.00% (7 goals 18 behinds) - 1903 Rd. 2:
720577

The North vs. Glenelg scoreline works out at 21.05% (8 goals 30 behinds). The fact that it was last vs. first makes it even more incredible!! It was a nice sunny day in Adelaide, so what were they doing out there?!

Scoring accuracy (by one team) - drawn game (bottom/top 3):
20.00%
(3 goals 12 behinds) - St Kilda - 1903 Rd. 2:
720596

20.00% (5 goals 20 behinds) - Carlton - 1921 Rd. 4:
720600

20.59% (7 goals 27 behinds) - Essendon - 1948 Grand Final:
720604
Essendon lost the replay!

That 1948 grand final would have to be the only instance in history where the score has been a draw despite there being a three goal difference between the two sides. Am I correct in assuming this?
One of two cases!:
720727

There's been 158 drawn games:
2 - 3 goal difference
9 - 2 goal difference
79 - 1 goal difference
68 - 0 goal difference (exact same score)

does anyone know if/where to find round-by-round AFL coaches votes from the mid-late 2000's?

A while back I emailed the AFLCA to enquire about missing votes for a 2010 game. While they were able to supply the votes for that game, they said "Unfortunately we don't still have the round by round votes prior to 2010".

Just having a look on www.australianfootball.com and with a quick peruse
I think it’s a record in the main 3 leagues
Breaking last years port adelaide 4.4.28 Woodville West Torrens 2.16.28

What is the record for the most players with a hyphenated surname who played in the same VFL/AFL game?

Only 38 players in history with a hyphenated name according to AFL Tables, 12 of which are current players.

So it's probably a pretty recent record.

Best I can find is 3.
- R11 2012 Essendon vs Sydney - Lovett-Murray, Roberts-Thomson and Dennis-Lane.
- R3 2018 Melbourne vs North Melbourne - Neal-Bullen, Vickers-Willis and Davies-Uniacke.
- R4 2018 North Melbourne vs Carlton - Vickers-Willis, Davies-Uniacke and Petrevski-Seton.
- R6 2018 North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide - Davies-Uniacke, Powell-Pepper and Byrne-Jones.

The three Cockatoo-Collins brothers never played against each other in the AFL.

Hawthorn kicked 3.1 in the first quarter and 3.2 in the last qtr of both games against GWS this year.

How often has a side twice kicked the same score in the same 2 quarters against the same opponent, in one season?

Has 3 quarters ever happened?

Q1 & Q4 - 19 times
Q2 & Q3 - 17 times
Q2 & Q4 - 17 times
Q3 & Q4 - 12 times

Three quarters has happened four times:

1st, 2nd & 3rd quarters for St.Kilda v Geelong 1899 (0.0, 0.0 and 0.1)
1st, 2nd & 4th quarters for South Melbourne v Geelong 1898 (0.0, 0.0 and 1.2)

1st, 3rd & 4th quarters for St.Kilda v South Melbourne 1897 (0.0, 0.1 and 0.1)

The bombers kicked the first goal of the game after 21 seconds last night. Their next was 108 minutes later.

Has their ever been a longer wait between two goals in the same game?

Geelong kicked 23 in a row against Freo last year in Rd 22. The Dockers led 3.2.20 to 1.5.11 at quarter time...Sheridan kicking their 3rd goal just before 1/4 time. The rest of the match was a Geelong procession....the match ended up with a Geelong smashing 24.14.158 to 3.7.25!

*Paul* has the stats for the game here
