Not having watched that many Crows games i was wondering if anyone could tell me what other positions he has played in apart from his midfield, tagging role. Is he way too small, light framed to play as a mid-tall defender. I have heard that he can take a good contested mark.

He's 189cm and 90kg, he's plenty big to play as a mid-tall defender, infact, I'd expect him to play as one a bit during '05, he'll go between the tagging/defensive role and a half back flank. Might actually have a match up for Michael O'Loughlin for a change...

He'll be an interesting player...I think he can reduce the effect of Hird, Ricciuto, Buckley, Crawford.

Watching the replays he reminds me a bit of a defence Chad Fletcher - goes about things quietly but has a solid effect on the game.

I'm going to do my best Colin Wisbey impression now :D

Strengths:good attitude, naturally accountable and has a kind of wiry strength that makes him both a very good mark and a very good tackler- seems to have phenomenally long arms- often you'll see him reach out and snag a player with one armed tackles, or back into packs and take strong marks overhead.
Very good at clearances and genuinely in and under- has a knack for getting the ball in a pack and jamming it on his boot to gain meterage.

Weaknesses: Not very quick, not very skilled- his kicking is average and is noticeably a cut below our top-liners- good depth, but just not very accurate.
I also kind of get the feeling his tagging ability will be limited by his lack of pace- he's not slow, but put him next to the Judds and Fletchers and he's pretty pedestrian.

I think he'll be of most value in away games, particularly on smaller grounds- on that basis he could be exactly what the doctor ordered, given how we tend to struggle in that situation.

Ok well the best way to put it would be you know how Chicky got towelled by O' Loughlin in the final against Sydney this year, well if they were to replay the game with Stinger on the Eagles list thats where id play him, on O' Loughlin.

He does all the profiles on potential draftees. If you ever stray onto the drafting and trading board you'll see a lot of his work.

I feel honoured to have Mead post on a thread which i created. I rate your football brain, especially West Coast Eagles issues as second to none. Posters like you make reading these threads worthwhile and informative.

Would you like a straw with that?

Ah! Thanks mate.
Congratulations - that quote thing can be tricky :)

Back on subject - players like he and Chick are essential if we are going to do anything with our Septembers for the next couple of years. These guys are genuinely tough at it, what you need when the pressure's on.

I doubt Stenglein will get anywhere in the media awards, but will play all 22 games and do well in the club B+F - he will have a job to do each week and will do it more times than not.

My only real concern is who misses out. With Cuz, Judd, Fletcher, Kerr, Stenglein, Braun, Embley and Sampi all likely to have midfield roles, what happens to a bloke like Josh Wooden, who was starting to become one of my favourites, or Adkins, a genuine game breaker?

Yeah probably

He hasn't delivered on it often enough, but he's probably me "project player" - the one that you hope will get there.

I will always recall a 60m pass at the Gabba (to Wilson I think), that never went more than about 4m off the ground. Awesome to watch

true, but he can run the lines and has a booming kick, if he gets more bulk and become more consistent, then yeh, but those things arnt that easy to work on.

guys,

you'll be more than happy with this bloke. He is a hard inside midfielder who is one the leagues best clearance players, he doesn't get a lot of soft touches, but he makes a difference by winning the hard ball in tight.

Further he is not really a tagger, he can win his own ball, he is a highly accountable defensive midfielder. not the same.

bottom line: he is what you don't have, which must make you a better team.

Mead that is a very accurate description

I have been a vocal critic of his on the Adelaide board where like most club supporters he is revered.

My cticisim matches your weaknesses to a tee - Jams the ball to boot with minimal effect or accuracy - has slow reflexes in disposing by hand or foot in close which results in the haphazard disposal.

Is a very good mark a great team player and on the right opponent can be a good nullifyer.
Is a leader and is coming into his prime where he should only get better - but he is IMO seriously overated.

At 189cm I would have like him to move on from his tagging role to take up a HBF which I think he would do well at - but for whatever reason Adelaide persevered with him as a tagger - maybe because of a lack of alternative ;)
