It's weird to suggest a fan favourite may be underrated, but I think that's the case. Not by supporters, but by the media. So rarely gets talked about outside of game day or receives half the coverage of some overhyped lesser lights.

A rolled gold star, with tremendous onfield leadership, regularly performs in big matches or moments, is unselfish, has that rare combination of inside grunt and attacking prowess, but unlike a few other show ponies (who shall remain nameless), also has a solid defensive game and is always accountable. Having even taken on run with roles earlier in his career.

Should have been All Australian in 2018 and is having a brilliant season. For all the talk of Kelly, Taranto or Cameron, this guy seems like the real standout at GWS and a true heart and soul player similar to Ward.
 
Absolute gun and always a shout to win some money betting on him to kick a goal or two (or more in last n ights case)
 
Top 15 player, Arguably the giants best player (I know Kelly has had injury and a form slump however Coniglio has gone past him IMO) and the biggest robbery of AA honours ive ever seen (Im a homer as well and would stand in the perth CBD ringing a bell trying to inform the people Sam Mitchell deserved 3 more AA jumpers but his game wasn't flashy enough or didnt play for Carlton)

In terms of Coniglio yes, He really is under-rated in terms of how good he is. He would be talked about as in that handful of best midfielders if he was in Melbourne.

But he isn't.

I definitely agree with this.

And he would have been talked about as a "cult favourite" for much longer.

Incorrect. Josh Kelly, Ward, Cameron get recognised. Coniglio is a touch underrated, but not because he plays for an interstate side. Its not some conspiracy from the bias Vic media. It’s because it’s hard to stand out in a side with that much talent.

He has lifted his game to another level this year and stands out in a talented side. That’s why he’s getting the added recognition.

I think the difference there is those three all came through the Vic system.

Coniglio was a WA boy, who ended up at a Sydney club. Has flown big time under the radar. AFL 360 couldn't possibly ignore him for their Monday night hero, being a stand in captain, injured during the game and still kicking 4 goals from the midfield/HF?

Honestly, I've seen him mentioned only in passing maybe a handful of times by the media outside of gameday. It's why AA selectors seemed comfortable absolutely shafting him for Edwards of all people.

To be fair most of us knew shiel had shit disposal, the media just loves to pump up a pretty boy with a good rig. Cogs can waste the ball abit too but he’s an awesome two way runner, loves a goal and isn’t afraid to crack In.

The Melbourne media take about 10 years to acknowledge non Vic players, AA selectors no different.

Where they come from makes zero difference. Fyfe isn’t a VIC boy. He’s from WA and he’s known as the star of the competition.

Cunnington from North is a great player and he’s very underrated.

Lachie Neale (an SA boy) was great at Fremantle but he didn’t stand out. He went to Brisbane and he’s finally getting recognised.

Point is, Coniglio is underrated, but not because he plays for GWS. It’s not some VIC media conspiracy.

Only reason was he wasn't in a Victorian club.

Only place Neale didnt stand out was Melbourne, good example. No conspiracy alleged, its bog ignorance, the Vic media create a news item & the rest then comment on it, no conspiracy, bit like the Canberra press gallery.

Calling it a conspiracy is a cheap way to deny reaity.
 
Absolute gun, as General Giant pointed out, there's a reason GWS were happy to let Shiel go in order to try and keep him and Kelly.

FWIW I think unless they win the flag, a very real possibility, Coniglio will stay for another two years.

Being in Melbourne never help Mitchell being rated in the top few midfielders, never stopped Fyfe having the media flap about him.
