Oh he’s still contracted. The obvious answer is for Steven to just collect a pay cheque next year from the Dees.

He will be 34 before the season starts. Any deal he can get beyond 2026 will be a win for him, any money they backended in his contract to make him a restricted free agent (top 25% of salary at Melbourne in 2026) will be good for Melbourne to be rid of.

This is true.

He still has a fantastic quarter here or there, usually beating an opponent aerially when they try to have a battle of strength.

But he’s lost a yard or three of pace, I assume his back or hamstrings are stuffed as he can’t do anything at ground level and he has lost any agility he had.

I think he’d be OK for a break glass in case of emergency situation for a team who thinks they are a true shot for 2026. But he’d need to be on a short leash behaviourally.

Also an indicator that Goodwin was his number one supporter. May got a one year extension not too long ago which might’ve been to smooth some salary out. But it can’t be coincidence that pretty much as soon as King gets appointed then May is told to move on.
