Did anyone see how Stevo actually broke his nose? I watched part of the game on again on Foxtel last night and bloody hell, 'Sad Stevo' can't take a trick.

The first time I watched the match I saw Mark Stevens taking a strong pack mark that wasn't paid (came off fingers...good decision) and then him getting up with blood streaming from his nose. How did that happen...the replays didn't show any real contact...did he do it to himself?

Watching it again last night it was obvious how it happened. He didn't break his nose when flying for that mark. About a minute or so before, he actually flew awkwardly for a mark in between three Port defenders...totally out of position but somehow the ball hit him directly in the face. His hands were no where near the ball and his nose copped the full impact.

As it was only a minute later, his nose was already bleeding when he went for the next mark.

I cringe everytime I see him fly for a mark because he seems to land so awkwardly, but now he is trying to mark balls with his face.

Hopefully this won't send him into another downward spiral of depression!

I thought it was an accidental knee or something from one of the Port players coming in to tackle him after the umpire called play on.

Poor bugger, good player but cant seem to take a trick.

I would save him for the real stuff anyway.

It was in the previous marking contest. He gets completey crunched. I whinced when I first saw it as I actually expected worse than just a broken nose.

I remember laughing at what he said when he got up though, not laughing at him being hurt but could hear what he said pretty clear on TV :)

Incredibly loudly about 10 cm's from the umpires face, "******** YOU!"
I think he thought it was a mark too.

and fair enough too :D

I know the ball was touched (just) but if an umpire is not going to pay marks like that then they should not be paying any pack marks because I would say more times than not an opposition player will get a finger on the ball.

Oh well, thats footy I guess.

Welcome aboard Toolman.

Good point regarding Stevo's mental wellbeing should things start going pear shaped again. I'll never forget hearing the bloke on the radio a year or two ago when he just couldn't get himself on the park.....Virtually said his career was over, and sounded almost ready to bid farewell to this mortal coil. Very harrowing stuff.

Amazing how he didn't get pinged for abusing the ump.
thats what I thought at the time, I was very surprised the umpire didnt give a free or something stupid like that.

Ump probably realised he deserved it. That, and Stevens kinda looked like Brad Pitt in Fight Club, might have decided the umpire would make a good Lou.

I think it was actually called touched off the boot.

I don't know if it was called touched off the boot, but if it was because it was touched by that dude in front of Stevo then that was fair enough....christ, the bloke nearly dislocated his finger on the ball before Stevo marked it. If the ump sees it and calls it we gotta take that. The problem is, is that we don't take too many contested marks in the forward 50 and for Stevo to take a nice one, only to have it not paid is gut wrenching!

Ah ok, I hadn't seen the replay, just going by what the radio commentry team said on the night.

Which mark were you watching? I couldn't see any contact, and if it was there, very minimal.

Hey Egg....time to get a bigger TV! And no matter how minimal...a touch is a touch and should be called as such if the umpire sees it. 8 times out of 10 the ump won't see it but he was in good position and so made the call!
