I am a big fan of Matthew Stokes. Does anyone know why he isn't playing or is it that they can't fit him in the side?

He had a bit of a form lapse after the Port game, and there haven't really been any injuries, so he hasn't been given a senior game.

He's definitely not injured or anything.

Yeah to be honest, I'd have him in the 22 ahead of players like Lonergan right now

He hardly got used in the Bulldogs game for some reason, and that hardly helped matters.

I think with ablett jr and chapman going to the middle more and more stokes may become a valuable small forward next year. Might not kick bags but will apply forward pressure. Would like to see him develop into a bode type player. Hard tackling and takes his chances when they are there.

He's played 8 or 9 games this year, and has shown a bit. I think matty would be rapt with that!

I also think it may be a policy of bombers... Look back at previous first year players, Ablett, Bartel, Kelly, S.Johnson etc all played around the 10 game mark in there first year...

He has had a great introduction into the afl. I think Matty will play close to 3/4 of 2007 and has shown plenty to suggest he'll be around for years to come :thumbsu:

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets traded to one of the adelaide-based clubs at the end of the year. He has shown he has value, but might find himself unable to cement a place in the 22.

I don't think so. There is most certainly a place for Stokes in the team. :thumbsu:

I agree.

Hmm... I can't see you guys trading him, not after just the one season.

Having followed the boy since he came down to adelaide from darwin with wwtfc as a 16 year old (i think). I can tell you know that he is a legit 'gun'. His fitness is - and always has been - his main weakness. With another pre-season under his belt he could become a genuine midfielder with the cats. Despite the fact that he has been earmarked as a small forward he is more than that. Last season he spent the entire year as a defender, almost quarterbacking the play, and then rotating into the midfield - ala Hodge with the hawks this season.

Any smart club would not trade a player like matty. End of point. He is class and is one of the most skillful players i've ever seen first hand. You won't let him go just yet.

see, that is where you don't understand... Geelong, in it's current incarnation, is not a smart club.

He could potentially get a run through the centre but he cannot play back at AFL level. His opponent would move straight to full forward. He is simply to small to play their.

He will most likely play his career in the forward line. Looks like he can make it but I doubt he will ever be a full time midfeilder.

He might want to look to model his work rate on Matthew Bode. Make himself into a small forward that harrasses and applies pressure on the opponent backmen and then when an error pops up jumps on it.

Yes Asty, Stokesy could do worse than to model his work-rate and pressure on Bode, and agreed, DanA it's highly unlikely that we'll see him floating around much in the defensive 50 due to his size.

I guess my point was aimed at emphasising the mere fact that the lad has the skills to do more than just play as a small forward. Even though he probably won't

Definately has the skills after all wasnt' he AA U18 when he was 16? Hopefully his late entry into AFL gives him the maturity to perform at the highest level consistantly with out needing that 2-3years that some of the 18yo's need.
