I am happily, or at least WAS happily reading through some of the Swans history and came across a rather distressing fact. Apparently Carey was passed over by the Swans, we had first go at him as he was from Wagga. North gave us cash for the young Wayne, surely an Packer/Bond moment that North fans must cackle about maniacally every now and then. Yes the guy is a tool but jeez, can you imagine?

Plugger, Magic, Carey, Kelly, Cresswell, Roos, Dunkley. I mean get me a bloody towel.

*sigh*

Of course, we probably would not have been bothered chasing Plugger if we had had someone recognised as one of the greatest CHF's ever to suck in a breath. Plus the whole salary cap, fitting them all in blah blah blah but still. But Plugger was very keen to leave Melbourne and if we could have got the balance right....

*sigh*

Anyway, you all no doubt know this. Does anyone know who the resposible party was for letting him go? The book I am reading says no-one has ever really put their hand up. Would you?

And you can add hird and longmire. Hird we could have taken as zone selection. And longmire went .in the same deal as carey. Yeh the good old days of giving away mitchell, williams, hird, carey, longmire, geez the club was run so well back then.

You don't want to know, then, that they could have been captained in their early days by one Terry Daniher, who was traded after 19 games? At least we had a look at him. Brother Neale was traded without ever pulling on the jumper.

Carey and Longmire were in the same transaction. Longmire made his debut for North in '88... so that puts the deal squarely in the Edelsten era. Typical.

Every club has these kind of nightmare stories.

Checkout the blunders that Fremantle made when they first joined the AFL . . . they'll haunt the Dockers for the rest of the millennium!

I think you could make the case fairly comfortably though that had Carey been on our side in '96 we'd be one premiership better off.

chammond is right though, every club has their own nightmare stories about players they missed out on.

Carey would have been nice to have as Longmire and Hird too. Could of even drafted Lenny Hayes.

Look at the errors Fremantle made, how many premierships do you think they;d have won by now had they have kept a holf of the likes of McLeod, Lucas amongst others etc... Surely they would have been in the mix of at least contending rather than dwelling at the bottom half under Drum etc.

the thing with carey, longmire and hird is how long do you think it would have been before they left sydney, because the condition the club was in then it would have been very hard to hold onto this trio. would it have been the year we lost williams would these players have tried to go to carlton with him or done a ben doolan/barry mitchell and just went into the draft. Because in all honesty you couldnt blame people leaving the club back then it was just a complete basket case. In some ways it ours and brisbane complete and utter failure that allowed things to change the way it has, priority picks were invented basically to help us and brisbane atleast put a side that could atleast compete, or would this trio have papered over the problems with the same problems happening say 5-7 years later. All i know is that after we lost these players we eventually built a strong club and played in three grand finals with the ultimate prize in 2005. Pretty much what could happen at freo.

Fremantle's mistakes are half that of what Sydney passed up.
Just Carey and Hird in our team..********. Then Longmire as well. And the Danihers.

I agree with the side we had from '96 onwards, but do you think the AFL would have made things so favourable with priority picks, zone choices and uncontracted player selections that was able to turn this club from what it was to what it is today. Danihers had nothing to do with the sydney era(apart from anthony), it was around the time we gained a brownlow medalist in graham teasdale. like i say we may have lost some very good players but we gained a club that is stable. If i had the choice between this trio or a sound club for the next 100 years id take a sound club every day, just look at the kangaroos now(and that is absolutly no disrespect to the roos.

Carey, you can say was a mistake but to be honest Longmire wasn't because we always had full forwards thoughtout his career that were at least solid options and with Hird he was always going to end up at Essendon because of the family connections with the Bombers.
