It's the term used to describe players who many proclaim to have 'potential' but in actuality will never play to it as they have the basketball IQ of dick cheese. Of course it is named after Stromile Swift who many still claim "He has potential!!!" about 3 years after the sane people realised he cannot not do anything other than catch alley-oops.

Who else has Stro-tential?

DJ Mbenga for the Mavs. He's about 27 and so many people claim he has potential. The only reason for this: he can run and jump and is tall. Nothing else. He is almost 30. If he cant accomplish the most basic basketball skills (rebound, shoot, score) he never will.

Gerald Green. If basketball was all about dunking and shooting stand still wide open J's, he be all NBA. But the fact it encompasses other things that he cannot handle means he has Stro-tential.

Tyrus Thomas. All the Bulls have massive woodies for him. Their combined pre-jac about him could easily resolve our drought problem. But he is THE prime candidate for Stro-tential as his game is basically the exact same. Im sure if the Grizzlies hadn any fans they would have been saying the same thing about Stro as the Bulls are now about Thomas. But all Tyrus has shown he can do is dunk and block shots. Shooting? Nah. Rebounding? Nah? Man defense? Nah. they should use him as the cream on a deal for KG/Pau before everyone realises he has Stro-tential.

That is all for now. I will think of some more later

Bender wasn't exactly a Stro-tential candidate. He was developing alright out of highschool, but after his 3rd year he was injured all the time, so he never developed. He played 76 games in 4 years after he turned 21 and retired at 25 due to injuries.

Nikoloz Tskitishvili would be a candidate. He was going to be the next Dirk, but apart from being tall and white there aren't many similarities. He's still floating around the league somewhere. I think he may still be on Phoenix's roster and he's still pretty young but I reckon it's safe to say he won't make it.

I reckon Darko Milicic is another candidate. Since he's been in the league all I've heard is about his potential. Occasionally he'll have a decent game which seems to sway a lot of peoples opinions, but then he goes right back to sucking. I was fooled by this guy in the past, but now realise apart from some blocks (and a lot of fouls) from overzealous defence and some buckets here and there he probably won't amount to much.

i respect your POV but i still maintain that boy had massive potential. admittedly i used to use him a lot on nba live because of it, but inevitably would end up disappointed.

Yeah Darko is a good one. Any big man who shows the slightest glimpse of athleticism is tagged as having 'potential'.

Mbenga and Darko being ones, also Jerome Moiso, Dalembert, Diop amongst others

Yeah, I have a soft spot for him because I used to use him on NBA live as well. He was a KG lite type player. I agree he had massive potential, but I reckon the reason he didn't fulfill it was because of injuries which exempts him from the Stro-tential list.

Nah, I reckon Nene's coming along alright. He was injured all of last season and when starting this season he averaged 14, 8, a steal, a block on 60% shooting in 30 minutes a game. So he's done alright as a fourth year player, in a different country with blackhole type players Carmelo and AI on his team.

ha yes darius miles. dont put bender in though, i like him 7'0" and could shoot threes, career was robbed by injury

I'll call it early and say Yi

but I'm probably wrong about him, I though Bargnani was gonna be a bust, but he surprised me last season. (i could still be right)

I know that Darko hasn't had the best of times, though I still think he is one of the players that will come good and be a good complementary player or even all-star in the future. He is a good defensive player and I believe only needs to improve his offence a little. But in about 2 years I think he will be proving a lot of doubters wrong.
Just my thought. Now I know Dal-las Mav'a Riq will be on my ass quicker then fat kids on cake, but it's just my opinion.

Darko is case in point for Stro-tential. He excels at only 1 thing, was relatively new to basketball so has lacks a nuanced understanding of the game (i.e. dumb), is 'athletic' and he hasnt shown the ability to give a shit and try to get better.

haha the ability to give a shit and try to get better is a probelm for lots of stro-tentials

Fair enough, lol. I think his time at Detroit didn't really help, and this seems to be the reason for the lack of motivation, hell maybe it even demotivated him.

The Nuggets signed him to an optimistic 6/60 deal last offseason.
