Why can't we train at the MCG?

After reading a few posts on the MB about the Saints and Dees looking at a sea change. Got me wondering who could veto a move for us into the G for training and club base etc? Is it up to the MCC? Having us training on the ground a couple times a week isn't going to ruin the surface.

Having the club office in the complex with training on the ground would be massive for us.

Pipe dream?

Do you mean only during the season when the ground doesn't have other commitments?

If that is so the entirety of the preseason needs to be run elsewhere anyway, the training equipment will already be at that location and duplicating or shifting those facilities isn't going to be cheap.

All for the purposes of training at the ground which I can see would offer advantages for wind conditions specific to the stadium and perhaps a bit of scenic familiarity but for the costs involved in duplicating the training facilities it would have to be compared to the cost of marking an oval the same size and backing the players to know where the swirly parts are on game day.

The playing surface won't take the load. Pure and simple.

The AFL and ultimately the MCC have made the call.

Next question would be, what's so wrong with the AAMI Park set-up?

I don't see any issue with it, the only reason for my OP was the word around that the club is looking to move training and facilities.

Could you imagine the out rage if the AFL and the MCC permitted us to train on the MCG. Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and maybe even Hawthorn and Carlton would all line up to complain.

****em its our ground. Not our fault vic park is rubbish and that a bowling club doesnt like the drugcheats.

I would agree entirely with you, we where there first so deal with it. But still i can only imagine the whining from the other AFL clubs with Eddie spearheading it of course

Not training at the G isn't a new thing. In Robbie Flower's 'Open Mike' he said they used to have to train in the MCG car park some preseaon sessions because the MCC and Cricket Victoria (or an earlier version of) didn't want them training on the field during cricket season.

And in VFA days, the MCC didn't even let us play there; we played on the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, a paddock adjacent to the MCG, which is now a carpark.

We weren't 'there first' we built it. Or more appropriately the MCC built it and then started the MFC.
