never visited this forum before, but thought i'd ask for some boring windows help.

Lately since i installed a windows xp update (you know the little yellow triangle with the !), now every time i shut down (past week or so) there's something new to update and it takes about 3 minutes.

Is there anyway to not have to do this, or is it neccessary. I assume anyone who got the little yellow triangle update windows thing would have gone through similar.

thanks.

If your PC is connected to the internet, you're absolutely nuts if you don't keep your machine patched. They don't do updates for fun, they're done to cover exploits in XP, which allow hackers to do stuff you don't want them to do.

Anti virus, anti spyware, and Windows updates are the 3 most important things you must take care of with your machine. Its just like checking the oil and water in your car.

Whenever i have to fix someones machine that is either cripplingly slow or doing weird stuff, one of the main reasons is because they have foolishly turned auto update turned off, usually because it was "annoying".

If you've just installed XP obviously there will be a large amount of updates to download, it is quite an old operating system after all. Once you're up to date, you'll notice they become quite rare, maybe 1 every few weeks at the most.

You don't need automatic updates enabled, because you can just manually update XP yourself. If you leave it on, you'll just be slowing down your computer and decreasing performance of applications. There are many other services Windows uses in the background that are useless, I'd advise you to turn some of them off (with the exception of any firewalls/anti-virus programs of course).

Thats fine if you actually do it!

My experience is that people who turn off Auto updates don't even think to manually update ever again, until their machines performance goes to crap.

Fair call that there are a few non required updates, hell just today mine tried to update IE, a program i never use. But there are several updates that prevent exploits of open ports and the like.
