I'm sure everyone remembers the problematic set of circumstances that led to finals fixtures getting shifted around last year...

Just noticed that Subiaco will now play host to the Wallabies vs Argentina Rugby Championship test clash on Saturday 14th of September. This will place it in the middle of the second week of finals, the Semi-Finals. I'm leery about having this fixture where it is after last year but I think they may have learned from their mistakes, since I don't necessarily see any finals calculations where this will be a major broadcaster issue.

Anyone see anything wrong with this as is?

It's going to be an issue in week 1 if Freo finishes top 4. This means that should Freo lose, they must play their home final on Friday night. So they can't have the Sunday game. Which means that the elimination final where the winner will potentially be can't be on Sunday either.

Not a massive problem, but it could have been if both WA teams finished top 4. It wouldn't have been the first time that Perth hosted 2 semi finals on the 1 weekend.

Will AFL have precedence over Rugby and other sports at the Crown Perth Stadium?

You would think that is one of the conditions for leaving Subi, and considering that the AFL teams will be the major tenants and revenue producers, can't see it happeneing any other way.

The fixturing schedule will become a bigger issue if Collingwood finish in the same section of the draw as the Dockers, making them prospective semifinal opponents.
The Magpies will play their final home-and-away game on Sunday, September 1. As the only finalist playing that day, Collingwood are anticipating playing their first final the following Sunday.
But if that happened, the Magpies would have only five days to recover if they had to play Fremantle at Patersons Stadium the next Friday.
AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said the league had raised the issue when the Test match was scheduled and will have to find a way to organise the finals around it.
"We were informed of the agreement when it was reached and we did raise our concerns at the time," he said. "From our point of view, it's not ideal for the structure of our finals but we have said we will endeavour to fixture around it."

Noticed that Subiaco will be hosting another wallabies game this year during the finals. This time during the first week on 6 September. With either Freo or West Coast having a good chance of needing to host a final, we are going to have to put up with this shit again. You'd think the AFL would make sure that other sports don't book the stadiums when we need them for finals.

The 2014 booking was in place last year, nothing new here.

It might not be new, but it's still ****ing stupid. They booked it on the worst weekend possible, on the worst day of the weekend.

How hard would it be to say to the ARU 'look, we're happy to let you use the ground, but if you want it in 3 weekends in September then you can only have it on Sundays'.

You think they didn't ask ... please !

IF the AFL want the ground, simple really, book it.

Shouldn't need to, given the WAFC would be well aware of this small little document called the AFL fixture.

So what is the endgame that the WAFC are playing? Is it to force the AFL to give them more money to have the stadium free?

It would be a very ballsy move of the AFL to say to Freo or West Coast that they forfeit the right to host a final. Knowing the AFL, they'll probably just rearrange the finals around the rugby match even if that then affects other teams.

Probably.

Simple solution...Give the WAFL their money, and put a levy on the WA teams to cover it (which would probably come out of the WAFLs dividend).

It's probably simpler than that: they want guaranteed income from each and every weekend. One code has got its wallet out ready to plonk down the cash, the other doesn't. Goodwill is nice and all, but it doesn't pay bills.

The end game for the WAFC as the stadium manager Hawker .. stadium comes first, Rugger ponies up the readies, the AFL do twiddly squat ...if the inaction by the AFL resulted in a further compromised FIXture, hello hello, more compromise, it is par for the course.
So Hawker is your view that the WAFC should cowtow to the AFL?
I'd like to see WA footy get management rights to the new stadium, because the AFL lack the track record when it comes to stadium management.

Really? Other than Waverly - which it ran just fine for 30 years by the way - just what stadiums have been under AFL management? Dont bother looking it up, Ill tell you - none. Not one other stadium. If you are going to hate the AFL on something, at least let it be something real.

In the case of Subiaco, the bookings are made by WA tourism i believe - the AFL wouldnt book a stadium unless it knew it would require it, such bookings are presumably only made when its apparent a team is going to make the finals as they cant reserve every major stadium in the country in case a team will make it years in advance - it only has a traditional hold on the MCG and doesnt require bookings there, it has priority at Etihad and doesnt require booking. In this case, the WAFC who accepted the booking during the AFL finals period will simply have to wear it if their teams should make it.

Don't think I ever suggested that the WAFC should cowtow to the AFL. If the WAFC can get more money out of the AFL, then good on them. As a football fan I'm annoyed that it will potentially disrupt the finals, so would like to see the AFL gain priority of the stadium during the finals.

Well, they basically have to. But i'll tell you now, if both Freo and West Coast qualify for a home final in week 1 there will be some serious governance questions asked of the WAFC.

I can imagine the headlines later this year. Especially if it ends up affecting Collingwood.

Not sure why the ARU want it at Subi anyway. There were fewer than 20,000 at the wallabies match last year. Wouldn't NIB be a much better venue for rugby?

They'll be playing on the Friday or Sunday - for whatever reason the rugby games cant be moved according to Demetriou. So it simply means the WA teams could end up on the wrong side of a day off. Its by no means catastrophic, its just not ideal - and the WA teams cant complain. Its not like the WACA is a realistic solution for a final.
