Collingwood have become experts at list management. I can see a scenario where Swan/Pendles/Thomas/Didak maybe subs with the intention of resting and subbing on only if needed later in the season.
Welcome to the nightmare sc season...lol

I have decided that trades may be very important later in the year. It is going to be a balancing act.
It is making me wonder weather bringing Curnow/Libba are worth it for Swallow, Harris or Heppel. I might stick with chosen rookies instead of using these trades.

I am of the exact mind. Preserving at least 10 trades by round 16 is my top priority. I have bewick instead of curnow, but wasting trades here will really bite back come the 3 bye rounds near the end and rotations nearing finals.

Q.

Pies are playing GC who havn't got within 50 points of any other team this year.
Swan is named as the starting sub.

Do you?

leave him on the ground and hope he gets subbed in early.

or

put that rookie on who is averaging 60.

Question: When will we ever know that Swan will be the substitute against Gold Coast?

Swan would easily get 60 in a quarter is he came on late as the sub... plus he would always be a chance to get an early run (injury - even though the Pies always seem to have a good run with injuries)!
Swan easily... but no 'C' obviously

This is irrelevant due to this...

We won't know and there within lies the problem. Can you continue to keep Swan captain if there is a risk he could be the sub or subbed off any time after half time.

In addition you'd have to say there's no way Swan could get 60 in a quarter against the GC when coming on as a sub. Given SC's scaling of points based on the closeness of the game, anyone who comes on as a sub against them is going to score sweet ****all since the game will be over long before the fourth quarter.

if he comes on 3rd quarter or even late 2nd quarter his impact on the game won't be huge so his sc score will go down, but im assuming that collingwood would have wrapped up the game by halfway through the 2nd quarter against gc

Agreed -I can't see swan ever being starting sub. Especially against suns... He's more likely not to play.
But as for the hypothetical here - of course he could nail 60 in a quarter - being fresh against tired bodies. He started off this season with a 90 in quarter 1, game 1. and the quarter by quarter grading is not that extreme people. I doubt it would be more than a 10% variance from actual scores.

He could nail 60 in a quarter in DT but it would be doubtful for SC unless it was a close game. Look at Krakouer's last term against the Kangaroos was very impressive but only netted about 37 points where as he hit 48 in DT where siutational factors are irrelevant.

If he was being subbed on against the GC (for example) it is likely that they are up by a fair margin considering the distance between the two sides. But I do think he could easily knock out a fair score against the GC and then be subbed off.

So would you take the risk of putting the C in Swan going into the game against the GC knowing there is a chance he could get subbed off (I am aware that this is a factor for every game). But if you leave it off you could miss a huge score, it a big decision going into round 18.

For anyone planning on playing Curnow:

But Ratten confessed he was unsure whether Curnow could maintain such peak form for the rest of the year and hinted he might be rested in a month.

"That's the unknown, isn't it?" Ratten said.

"From an attitude point of view he's doing everything right. He's up there watching his tapes as much or more than anyone else.

"I think the way the game's played we might have to look at rotating players anyway, whether it's as a sub or out of the team.

"That might be something that comes up around Round 6, 7 or 8.

"So we'll have a look at that, but he's going well at the moment."

Anyone starting Lower on the field this week? Seems a bit of a risk, esp. considering the players that have come back.

I'm not sure about Toy either. I think I'll go McKernan over these two, as the Crows need him on the field as second ruck. Amirite, Crows fans?

I reckon McKernan's a starter for shizzle! The Crows are limping into this game and any player who's fit surely will start on the park.
The Lower thing's a lot harder to pick but I figure if he plays he should start - won't the temptation be to put the green vest on someone coming back to AFL match fitness? Hell, what do I know, it's craps lotto really, I just know that Lower has the potential to post a 100 if he gets a full game. Pretty tempting.

Sub Richardson :o ... Dismal score. I probably would've started him as emergency had he not been named on a half back flank in the team sheet. Now, like a few others, I'm hoping krak remains out of the pies team so I get matera's score.
Honestly, pulling your sub from the starting 18 makes it bloody difficult for us spercoaches
