Plan, build, and develop a small town into a major metropolis. Use hex-shaped building tiles to add residential, commercial, civic, and industrial areas, as well as special points of interest that provide benefits and take advantage of the resources of nearby towns. Your goal is to have your borough thrive and end up with a greater population than any of your opponents.

Suburbia is a tile-laying game in which each player tries to build up an economic engine and infrastructure that will be initially self-sufficient, and eventually become both profitable and encourage population growth. As your town grows, you'll modify both your income and your reputation. As your income increases, you'll have more cash on hand to purchase better and more valuable buildings, such as an international airport or a high rise office building. As your reputation increases, you'll gain more and more population (and the winner at the end of the game is the player with the largest population).

During each game, players compete for several unique goals that offer an additional population boost – and the buildings available in each game vary, so you'll never play the same game twice!

Yeah, i've been tossing up between this and Alhambra. Similar-ish games.

Ive managed to get 2 plays of this in over the weekend and its been pretty sweet.

Id definately put this in the group with other tile layers like Carcassone, Alhambra, Glen More.

Carcassone has its farmer confussion, Alhambra gets a bit ill chase the money and hope and Glen More is just so damn hard to find.

Ive found Suburbia quite easy to play and very sleek and well structured. Simple choices, build 1 thing each turn and apply its results, but each choice can have great effects. The changes in each game were quite good as less than half the tiles are used in each game and goals vary nicely so its replayability will be extremely good. i.e. Home owners association was massive in the first game when one of the goals was to build the most residential, the next game where a goal was to build the least Residential it was **** on a bull.

A few bad decisions however can totally ruin the game though, the GF dug herself a hole last game that was just impossible to recover from, her last 5 turns were basically pass are we done yet, not so much fun for her.

Id probably rate it ahead of the other tile layers so far and clearly ahead of my other city builder in Urban Sprawl.

Alhambra is pretty damn good to but given the choice id say you would get more plays out of Suburbia just because its so neat and tidy yet deep and varied. I havent played with the expansion yet but it looks to add some cool features too but i guess the same could be said for Alhambra.

Cant see how you could go wrong with Suburbia its just a well designed good good game.

GET IT BEFORE IT SELLS OUT AGAIN, Alhambra is always around :)

Ok so i had a gamer mate over for a day and we gave this a crack.

OMG what an intense game it was with 2 long time gamers playing. Every decision became critical it was crazy, this did cause a little analysis paralysis here and there but it was worth it. We both walked away after 2 games saying how amazing the games were and talked ifs buts and maybes for ages after.

Mates quote was it has to be the best designned, smooth game ive ever played with so much more depth than it first appears.

Add on to that the fact if you take each tile and look at them thematically its been done so so well. Put a landfill next to a residential area less people want to live there, farms make more money the more resteraunts there are to supply, airports get better and better the more airports there are to go to, parks make most places more likable. It all just works.

I had this as an 8.5 on BGG after playing with the family and solo (great variant really burnt my brain to beat) but after playing it hardcore its moving to a 9.5.

Cant recommend it highly enough just grab a copy if you can, you wont regret it.

P.S. keeping the expansion back for now but it looks amazing too, for now enjoying the base game so much no need to add more :)

Haven't played this or Alhambra, but I think that Alhambra comes alive with a couple of the expansions. Still tossing up between the two.

Alhambra is available any time. Suburbia has just had a reprint so its available atm.

Every print of Suburbia has sold out pretty quick so id expect this one to aswell. For that reason alone id grab it now while you can.

hey SnowRoo, It sounds like a cracking game, what is the minimum recommended age to play? Looking for another family game. Thanks mate. :)

Recommended for 8 and up. Probably a good one for kids as it has some basic money management and reasonable spacial awareness.

Pretty easy to teach and learn on a basic level. Have some fun with the kids then step it up when the players come to visit :)

Where'd you get it from? Its tough to find for a decent price unfortunately.
Presents of Mind in Paddington, Brisbane. $90, a bit on the high side but I'd seen it online for up to $115.

I was going to get it in my last big order from Amazon as it was a good price, but for some reason its one of the few games that doesn't ship to an Aussie address :(

$71.25 from Milsims might be the way to go instead.

Had another game of this today. A bit wonky because I didn't go through the rules thoroughly enough, relying on my memory too much.

Made a few major stuff ups, but my guess is I would have lost by 30-ish anyway. Opponent got the tile that lets you ignore -income on red lines so his income stayed high, meanwhile I got the PR firm hoping to keep my Rep higher but there was the Miscreant open goal so it worked against me anyway. Lost 151 to 211.

A good game, really liked it.

From the sounds of it, Suburbia, and various other games, sell like the proverbial hotcakes (personally I prefer bacon 'n' egg muffins ;)). My question is, why are reprints of these games seemingly done in such small quantities?
