Self-explanatory title really, what are your most gruesome experiences regarding lack of sun protection?

Yesterday whilst having a hit of tennis with a mate, I made the stupid decision to wear a singlet rather than a T-shirt when it was obvious that I had misplaced the sunscreen. The weather was kind of interchanging between cloudy and sunny at the time so I thought that if I was lucky, I would only escape with minimal damage. As a result, only my shoulders and a small portion of my chest were burnt....but they were well burnt; excruciating when lotion is rubbed upon them. Surprisingly I was not burnt at all on my face, so if I had just been smart enough to wack on a shirt my poor skin would have been spared.

I also had a fairly similar burn back in grade 3 whilst on school camp. Given that my knowledge of UV radiation was obviously limited back then I had a very blase attitude towards it. When I got home I removed my shirt and mum subsequently shrieked at the large lobster-like imprint down the entire length of my shoulder. Many tears were expelled due to the pain, and I felt red raw for at least a week.

Please share some cringworthy/hilarious stories of your own. :thumbsu::fire:

Had a mate who went to a festival in a singlet, where the sun was out for 30 minutes the rest of the day it pissed down rain. In that 30 minutes, he somehow managed to get one of the worst sunburns I have ever seen. Peeling for weeks. Guess that's what you get for being a white, freckly, bitch :p

Not the worst but years ago was watching TV for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. That night before bed notice my right arm is sunburnt because shitty thin rental property windows

Last summer - spent two hours kicking the footy with a mate, wearing a singlet which exposed my arms and shoulders. Absolutely copped it.

Next day I had to go to work and constantly raise my arms above my head to lift / put away boxes in a warehouse.

From now on, covering up as much as possible

Has anyone else had an allergic reaction to the banana boat aloe spray?

Broke out in these tiny little irritable dots all over the sunburn ffs. Stopped using the spray, they went away.

My wife has had a similar reaction to a different brand of sunscreen. Most commercial sunscreens are laden with chemicals and even people who don't have sensitive skin can have reactions. I buy a sunscreen that uses zinc oxide only as the sun protection agent. It also contains other natural ingredients (see pic below). It's a little pricey, but it's worth it.

On being sunburnt, I've had my fair share of being burnt, and being a surfer hasn't helped. I've had a few episodes of back peeling and a little on the nose. Thankfully though, due to my heritage, I tan easily and I will go pretty brown with only 10 minutes of sun. If I go surfing at around 1-3PM, I will just pop a little on my nose and I won't burn. If I go in the morning, I will put a coat all over (in summer of course) and if I don't, I will burn.

Got very bad sunburn on my shoulders once while swimming in an outdoor pool to the point of having blisters. Hurt like hell for a few days and after it peeled off I was left with shoulders covered in freckles.

Copped a horrendous sunburn a few weeks ago.

Went for a surf in Noosa, then met a few friends on the main beach, took off my rashvest, fell asleep for 45 minutes and spent the next week or so in excruciating pain. Had to sleep on the front of my torso for a fortnight. Shocking scenes. Slip, slop, slap.

back of the knees is a place i always forget to put sunscreen on and its an excruciating place to be badly burnt

probably the most annoying burn i had was about 10 years back, was at the beach catching waves with this chick i was seeing at the time, came back in for a drink and she was still out there so had to reapply my own sunscreen to my back. Ended up with with moderate sunburn in blotches and patches that i had missed from trying to rub in my own back :$ looked pretty horrendous for the next 6-12 months until the skin colours started to match again

When your body's brown as a berry but you can'’t lie down, better let yourself cool down.

.

I use Nivea sunscreen/sunspray, and I use it pretty much everyday, even in winter. Is it safe to use or no?? Am I going to die tomorrow :p

Have had a few days where I crisped up horribly and dealt with the usual pain

Though what scares me the most, I got a terrible blister on my foot in Vegas (not sun related), had to have it popped and cleaned and it was one of the most painful things I've had and the doctor there told me people fall asleep in the Vegas sun and get blisters the size of their chest and need to go through what I just went through on a much larger scale. That sent massive shivers down my spine, I'll def never fall asleep in the sun after hearing that

I had third degree sunburn, blisters and heat exhaustion when I was 15. Spent the day at the tennis with no sunscreen in 38 degree heat. Had to get on a drip because I was dehydrated and be wrapped in damp sheets because I couldn't wear clothes. 'twas effed up.

Also had an allergic reaction to The Cancer Council sunscreen in the last couple of weeks. Put it on my face and my skin got burnt by it (before I went outside). Couldn't wear makeup for a week or so and my skin was raw.

As a kid in the 70's we never wore sunscreen and as a teenager in the 80's we doused ourselves with Reef coconut oil and slowly roasted ourselves over many hours, I hate to think of the damage that we did, if I don't get melanoma it will be a miracle.

But the worst sunburn I ever got was New Years Day Australian Made concert in Adelaide, after a big night out, all day concert in the searing heat, no sunscreen, dehydrated. My skin was literally one big blister. I think I spent about a week not being able to move as my skin would become so tight, coupled with pounding headaches. I have scarring on my shoulders from it, looks like loss of pigment in areas.

Great concert though.

Nope. You'll be fine. :p

But do think about going for more natural sunscreens. It's worth it in the long run. :thumbsu:

Have had some very solid sunburns in my time. First bad one I ever remember was at the river with the family. My sister and I both got super burnt and sat in the lounge room with cold flannels on our face all night.

As an adult, at a mate's shack, the very first day I sun creamed everywhere except my feet, they got burnt to buggery. Couldn't even bear to wear socks for a few days after, even thongs were excruciating but the least painful of the lot.

Plenty of days at Adelaide Oval for the cricket have resulted in me being lobster'd either on the face, legs, arms, or elsewhere. One of my worst face burns though came on a slightly sunny, low 20's day for the Slowdown at Footy Park (always the first weekend of October). Sun didn't feel strong at all, I actually wore a jumper all day and never felt warm enough to take it off. But when I got home I looked in the mirror and went "Holy shit." I was bright red, but only from the nose up. My stubble had stopped my beard area getting burnt, so I looked like the ****ing Lone Ranger. That was a terrible week at work.

Unless the sun starts shining inside a casino, I'm sure you'll be fine ;)

Played cricket from 9am - 6pm with mates, no sunscreen, hat etc. The following days and weeks my skin peeled a lot and my nose resembled a Cc's chip.

19 years later, was burned to a crisp at the final public training session on grand final week. One side of my head starting from the ear down to the shoulder was really red. Was wearing a hat and the other side was fine. My forearms alsogot burnt, but the weirdest was my knees, they were red for ages followed by a bigdark looking bruise. Even today they still are adifferent shade compared to the rest of my skin.
