I like others on here subscribe to the general formula that earmarks most trades as "cash in one cash cow, use the profits to upgrade another cash cow to a gun".
Then you have a few trades saved for "injuries"

However, each year I always earmark one trade for a "I f*** up" trade. This allows you to trade one player for a similar priced player.

Most will see this as trading sideways, which it is. Apparently trading sideways is a big NO NO.
I disagree, I say you can have one sideways trade, as long as you use it wisely. Wisely being the key word! The reason why most sideways trading is a no no is because people make stupid decisions where they dont benefit much in the Long Run.

OK, now for the real life example to back my point of opinion up.
Last year I silly enough to select Luke Ball. After Round 1 I realised that he would struggle for the year, and was too injury prone. So I 'sideways' traded him for Simon Black.
Points difference between the two over the last 21 rounds was 393 point in the plus.
You could add in that I used Black as a captain for a couple of weeks (when he was scoring well), minus the scores that a bench player would have scored for the couple of matches ball missed, and I still calculated that the one trade earned me around 400 points. Thats 20 points a round, so not bad for one trade.

(in fact you could add an extra 60 points on top of that as i actually used my last trade in the last week (had been saved for an injury but had no injuries for the last round) to change Black for another player. Black ended the season poorly with 20, 65 & 39 in the last three rounds.

Anyway, moral of the story is while most trades revolve around upgrading cash cows to guns don't be afraid to use a trade or two for something different, particurly if the trade stacks up or has a well though out purpose.

I traded Lovett-Murray up to Gilbee and A.Edwards down to Hill.

You could call that an "I stuffed up" trade if you like. It's certainly looking like a smart call at this point in time.

I consider only one trade 'wasted' as getting Gilbee into the side can be considered upgrading to a gun.

Made 2 very average trades in a moment of craziness round 1.
Stanton out for Priddis
Johnstone out for Dempsey

Dempsey pulls hammy, Johnstone scores 130.

Wasted trades," I stuffed up trades" whatever you want to call it. However I have 200k in the bank, so once my mid priced players get to about 450k, I dont have to use up a trade from a cash cow in order to upgrade.

With a bit of luck, minimal injuries and smart trading here on in all could not be lost.

the only time a "sideways" trade would be acceptable would be if a player got injured for a couple of months

a perfect example would be lucas getting injured for 11 weeks or whatever and trading lucas for say franklin would be a good example of a good sideways trade

I agree with your comments at a high level, however its always risky, especially after 2 rounds.

I'm half regretting trading out Aker for Hill, not because I regret getting Hill but Aker might finally come good just to shaft me. I hope Birdman does well.

Yeah I agree its risky, but if you get it right it can pay off.

Essentially I think that you should not be afraid to change you mind about a player and if you have good reasons to suspect that your "gun" has become and will stay a "Dud" for the rest of the year then don't be afraid (or stubbon) to trade sideways.

All the fun of supercoach hey!!!
