Business & Finance Supermarkets

i get annoyed with all the variety and taglines on products. how have we ended up with whole aisles full of toilet paper? i sometimes choose to buy the most basic of product because there is less bullshit advertising on it (toothbrushes and toothpaste for example).
and i feel sad for people that need to buy things like grated cheese. supermarkets are essentially half full of useless crap for lazy people.

my local aldi is cheap, but clearly they save on overheads like employing sufficient checkout workers.

You obviously haven't been to woolies or coles lately, there is bugger all checkout staff.

Worked at two different supermarkets... Think I'd rather be unemployed than ever go through that again.

As for shopping at them or the quality of their food it all varies a fair bit, will say though some Aldi shoppers are either delusional or have some really whacked taste buds. Still when I shop for just myself I tend to buy from a mix of supermarkets and butchers/green grocers etc, Aldi is by far the worst place to shop if you want fresh goods and have limited freezer space, while they might be cheaper per kg they only offer bulk. I mean I want 1 freaking carrot, not 1kg and a few potatoes not a 3kg bag...

I have to say I am a fan of the 2 for $x marketing craze that the duopoly have adopted*. One bag of Doritos for $3.20 or two for $4? Yeah I'll take two. Generally the savings are pretty good... *the only problem is when they do it to stuff like bread which is a PITA when you don't have the space/don't want to freeze a whole spare loaf and the choice is $4.20 for one and $5 for two. Obvious solution is of course to walk 5m outside the checkout and buy bread from the bakery which actually tastes like it was made from baked flour, water, yeast etc.

I'm tempted to sign up for an 'everyday rewards card' (really, I can get like $20 in vouchers if I spend hundreds here every week for a year - great!) just so I can hand it to the checkout operator the second I get there to avoid being asked if I have said card for the 4,000th time.

I shop at a local butchers and local fruit and veg once a week. Go to Aldi once a month for detergent and cleaning stuff, bathroom stuff, pasta, sauces, muesli bars and porridge etc. Been doing it for about 12 months. Save so much money.

That is pretty much what i do. I have a really great market next to me that has well priced fruit and veg as well as nuts, cheeses etc

The one thing i was going to safeway for was anciovies because aldi stopped selling them but i just realised that the market near me sells them for 1/4 of the price.

Agree on the supermarket ones being worthless but the Two Dogs Hardware points card is surpisingly very worthwhile, helps that I shop there heaps though I guess with it being the only hardware place around.

If it isn't their sisters...it's the iced coffee

I have no real loyalty. I shop at whichever one is closer to where I happen to be living.

I try to buy my fruit, veg and meat from specialist retailers but sometimes it's a bit difficult. If you're shopping on your way home from work late, they're often closed.

I do like shopping at Aldi. Their meat leaves a bit to be desired, and their veggies are inconveniently bulk parceled, but if you are just buying processed food there it's fine and ridiculously cheap. Can't stand their tomato sauce though, got to have Fountain.

Luckily I live close to Vic market so get all my fresh food there - Aldi for cleaning stuff and processed food,Asian supermarkets for rice, sauces etc. Only go to Coles or Safeway every few months if I'm after a specific brand.
