With five matches left in the H&A Season, it looks like we're set to give the finals another good shake. Some punters are even beginning to tip us as favourites for the flag. Personally, I can't place us above the Hawks and Cats with any real confidence, but time will tell. One thing's for sure ... we are a very different side in 2013.

Looking at the 22 likely to tackle the Bulldogs this weekend, we're down eight players from the GF side ...Goodes, Jetta, LRT, Shaw, AJ, Morton, Mattner & Sam Reid ... that's more than a third of a team gone.

Question is, are we a better team this year?

I reckon our forward line is stronger. With the addition of Tippett, the improvement of White and the growing power of our ruck stocks, this year we seem to rely less on our mids to get the goals. It's more of a conventional set up. As such, we're stretching teams that do not have three strong defenders. And yet, we still have the likes of Benny McGlynn, Mitchy and Lamb to pick up the crumbs. Sam Reid is gone, but I'm not convinced he'd get a game in our current squad. And while Goodesy is undoubtedly a match winner, I still prefer our set up this year. If we can get the dual Brownlow medallist back, he's likely to play more of a midfielders role, anyway. Heaven help the opposition if we do.

The backline is a slightly different story. In my opinion, the loss of AJ and Mattner makes the backline our achilles heel. Don't get me wrong. I think Dane Rampe has been a revelation. Everitt has slipped back to help out, and the elite form of Mal and McVeigh can't be questioned. The big concern is how our backline copes against three strong tall forwards. The Hawks big three toweled us up in round 7, and they'll seek to exploit us in that area again in coming weeks. Richards has not quite found last year's form. And while Rampe gets better every outing, he still needs our midfield to stop that quick ball coming in. Wouldn't it be great to get LRT back?

I don't think there's any doubt our midfield is even better this year. In 2012 there was much debate as to which team had the best mids. This year, Hanners, JPK, ROK, Parks, Jack and co. have put that debate to bed once and for all. They're simply awesome, and if we're to go deep into September, it's likely to be on the back of this hard-running bunch of on-ballers. Hanners will go closer than most to the Brownlow. Jack is amazing. And if you wanted any other proof of our depth, just look at first year player Tommy Mitchell. He'd be first mid picked in most other teams, and he's only played 8 games. Amazing.

It's true. Other teams will have improved, too. But across the board, the Swans are bursting with players in career-best form. Among them are Pyke, McVeigh, Hanners, Malceski, Lamb, Everitt, Bird, KJack, White, Parker and yep ... even Grundy.

I think we are a better team this year. Looking good for September.

I think with the injuries hurting the side but the natural improvement and inclusion of Tippett we probably break even and are at least on par with last year.

The side that has won the last few weeks needs to convince me in round 22 and 23 it is ready for a flag tilt to be honest.

Right now i am not quite as confident as last year.

I think the Cats are better than the crows or pies from the top 4 last year and i think Hawthorn are playing better than they were last year.

Can we rely on White, Rampe, B Jack, Lamb even Mitchell against the big clubs in September, well Mitchell i am sold on.

Also will Tippett stand up and be the big difference against the best? he was the big out when we played Geelong and Hawthorn this year.

I guess yeah my biggest concern is not our own form, its the Cats and Hawks, I would not want to go into september losing 22 and 23 and being 0-4 v both of them combined

Great op.

I reckon we are second favourite simply because The Cats are scizo and can turn up to play or go to sleep just as easily. Still to be absolutely convinced they are better than us but the respect runs deep and I don't want to play the buggers in a knock out.

Hawks are clear favourites - so potent up front if the midfield gets it to them.

As for us I d think we are better than last year but would love to have LRT and Goodes back especially.

Mitchell improves us immeasurably in my opinion. Inside and out. His hands are so quick and clean. He wins his own ball, denies the opponents space, tackles, is quick and is accurate as hell on goal. Somewhere out there is a football factory and T Mitchell is the result of years of R&D and testing. And they got the package right.

In furious agreement with the rest of the post. The only thing I would add is all of our big losses, like the Hawks one, over the last few years have been when, inexplicably, our mids have been beaten or gone to sleep and their defensive pressure disappears allowing clean and quick opposition delivery into the 50. Any backline looks deficient if that happens and I reckon our bad play flattered the Hawks "a bit", they certainly made us play bad, and made that 3 tall forward line look a lot better than it actually was.

Anyway it will be interesting to see what happens in month or so. If we counter them in the last round Clarkson will have all sorts of headaches in trying to sort out how to beat us. They simply don't have the grunt and speed to match us if our mids deny them space to play precision football.

For what's it's worth, I wasn't confident at this stage last year. And I thought we were stuffed when we lost to the Pies, Hawks and Cats in the weeks leading into the finals.

Agreed.

I am always a little pessimistic when it comes to thinking too far ahead.

Not in the same league as Punts but yeah a little cautious.

I think we need to get a top 4 spot though and we cant not afford to lose more than a game to do so.

Our midfield is better this year IMO.

Our Fwd line is better this year IMO.

Our rucks are about par if not slightly better this year (need Mummy to fire for finals) IMO.

Our defence is weakened but not as much as I would have expected had you said at the start of the year we'd lose the guys we have (marty, shaw, AJ, LRT).

As such, I'm feeling very positive about our team at the moment and the chances of making another GF. The question is, can we bring our best when we need to like we did last year. If you lose "important" matches in the home & away season it actually doesn't matter if you make the 8 and are invincible come finals. More-so if you make top 4. And we've got a real chance at making top 2. I think we could bring our A game come finals again & if we do no-one can beat us. If we're slightly off then the quality of the Cats or Hawks (mainly) could cost us another flag. I think there's the added advantage of having guys hungry for premiership glory this year (Benny, Jesse, Tippett, Rampe, Mitchell etc) not to mentioned the fact it migth well be the last hurrah for guys like Bolton, Goodesy & LRT with regard to premiership success.

I won't know until the final siren sounds for our year but at this point I'm more confident in this years Swans than last years at this point in the season. There's still actually a fairly long way (in footy terms) to go though.

Our ability to score is better. I don't know the stats but it we seem to score more and regularly beat up teams by 30+ points.

I'm confident this year but wary of Hawthorn - the pain of losing a GF will drive them - they'll be hard to beat.

I don't think the Cats are a lock for the top 4 yet. They're a bit up and down. Could easily slip one against North on Friday.

No swallow hurts though
