Last year the Swans shot down a change.org petition to stop playing Neil Diamond during the quarter time break.

The Club said:
"We're aware of the petition and the views of some fans, however Sweet Caroline is a fan favourite for many others,"

To me this reeks of bullshit.

I know bigfooty is only a small sample of the supporterbase, but it seems a pretty broad demographic.

Do any if you actually enjoy this?

Being treated like a cliched sportscrowd and subjected to cultural transplants?

Diamond has nothing to do with AFLM. The relevance to our club is non existent.

Why continue flogging an engagement device that has proved so divisive and irrelevant to AFLM, Sydney Swans and even Australian culture?

Can we please revisit this protest before we have to endure Neil for another year?

I don’t mind it. I think clubs that go for anthemic bangers really set themselves up for embarrassment (see: Dockers with AC/DC and Port with INXS.)
You’re missing the point. It’s the cultural appropriation that is cringeworthy. Not the nature of the song.

The examples mentioned are both great Australian cultural examples. Consistent with our environment and club representation.

But stealing a tune becuase it works for baseball is rubbish.

Why can’t we produce our own cultural artifacts?

Presets / Hoodoo Gurus / Sia / Spiderbait / etc etc etc ......

What sort of club are we if the powers that be command the club to dance becuase the Red Sox do? Why do we GAF?

Personally I wouldn't have one but if the Club insisted, at least HB includes 'thunder' related lyrics.

"I'm rolling thunder, pouring rain
I'm coming on like a hurricane
My lightning's flashing across the sky
You're only young but you're gonna die
I won't take no prisoners won't spare no lives
Nobody's putting up a fight
I got my bell I'm gonna take you to hell
I'm gonna get ya, satan get ya

Hells bells
Hells bells, you got me ringing
Hells bells, my temperature's high
Hells bells

Can I petition you not to call it AFLM?

Sweet Caroline is crap, get rid of it

Someone clearly went to a Redsox game, probably Harley as he is a fan and copied it.

I for one didn’t know that was the history of that song. I’ve just always liked it and assume it would be an easy sing-along in the tense moments at a footy match. Sometimes it can just be that simple in life.

Having said that, I’m never at the SCG so I can’t speak for those that attend every second week and hear it.

I went to a Red Sox game and loathed the nonsense tune then as well. Didn't see Harley tho.

SM Dimmies is spot on about the cultural appropriation.

Whats wrong with you know playing nothing.... or running a beer ad

Agree with the OP. If we let them get away with "Sweet Caroline", next thing you know it will be "Witchy Woman" or some Meatloaf hit.

When there is a song we all feel - like at Port Adelaide "Never Tear us Apart" - then ok

I gotta admit I like Sweet Caroline, but I think I enjoy the singing and dancing around side of it more than the song itself and when I have taken people to a game for the first time, they all love it.

Personally I have always thought I See Red by Split Enz would work great for us and be ours and ours alone.

I actually have a nice memory of singing it arm in arm with my wife and her girlfriend in the Essebdon semi last year. We then blew the bombers away.

That's a footy culture tick from me.

Sure it's not the most macho or cool track in history, but it's a great couple's song.

Sing away with zero shame Jewelsbon, I've got your back

NO!!! Rack off...... please ;)

How many home games do you actually attend per season? Do you sing along? Would you in fact sing along if they played something else?

What does it matter if there is relevance? What do you want them to sing? There's only one Tony Locket? It's fan entertainment during the break... and they love it! They sing along and enjoy themselves, so leave them alone!

What a crock!

The whole marketing of the game is based on American sports, the way it's reported is based on American media, and you want to cringe because of a song???

Get a grip, mate! Sweet Caroline is the least of our problems...

Did I just lose time and it’s suddenly the off season?

Surely we have bigger things to worry about.

It's called distracting ourselves from the stress of this week's game.

Can't be on edge 24/7. That's why we collapsed last year after the sustained focus from rnd 7 onwards.

when we ran out to that crap in 96 i was disappointed
I like a healthy dose of disappointment, and I prefer to have it in between quarters rather than during them.
