I'm not sure if this is in the right Sydney Swans forum, but are there any members here that go to or are old boys of Sydney GPS schools eg sydney grammar, shore, st josephs, kings etc or the other comp with schools like waverly, cranbrook etc

just wanna ask a few questions

cheers.

ok - i go to Brisbane GPS, some similarities. few things i want to know

1. what the **** are armidale school doing in Sydney GPS? do them and the opponents drive like 6 hours the day before to play rugby/soccer fixtures? i thought we had it bad driving 1 half hours to toowoomba every year..
2. why are sydney boys high school bad at rugby/ (or any sport?), most fixtures they look to have forfeited and one game they did play they lost 118-0 hahaha. opposite here brisbane state high are one of the dominant forces of rugby
3. i usually see there are matches between gps schools and they play the other schools knox, waverly etc in rugby are these friendlies or do they count towards one comp? i heard joeys lost a game for the first time in 4 years to riverview, so would that game be a friendly or official?

theres a few more i want to ask but i cant remember, ill ask later

1. Nobody knows what Armidale are doing in the GPS. They almost never compete in GPS events (because they are so far away), and they're not even really considered part of it most of the time.

2. Sydney Boys High are bad at rugby and most other sports because they focus mainly on academics. They're academically selective, and as far as I know, don't offer any sports scholarships. So, students there tend to focus on their homework rather than sport. Grammar are similar, though they are quite strong in cricket, winning the premiership a few years back, more than handy at soccer and basketball as well, and have done much better in rugby and rowing recently (came third in the Head Of The River in my last year there, and I think about 4th in rugby in the same year. Haven't kept track over the last year though, since I left).

3. Usually those games are rugby games, and in the preseason. They don't count to any actual competition, but they aren't really friendly either. Joeys and Riverview are both GPS schools though, so I'm pretty sure that game would have been an official one.

Yeh all those seem bang on (i did the HSC at SGS this year). Regarding Armidale, i don't know how they first came into the GPS, but they used to supply SGS with footy players during the really low years of Grammar rugby during the late 90's and early 2000's. They also enter a few athletes in the GPS Atheltics Carnival every year, though not many are real contenders for the top events.

The Joeys-View match was definitely an official GPS match. In the preseason most of the GPS schools play other schools from the ISA (St Augustines, St Andrews etc.) or CAS (Knox, Cranbrook, Waverly, Trinity etc.) groups of schools.

bloodstainedangel, any hint as to who you might be?

Sadly, Grammar is a GPS school, one thing this drivel lacks.

just realised st ignatius and riverview are the same my bad, is that a big rivalry between st ignatius and st josephs both being the catholic schools of gps?? i know st josephs terrace and st josephs nudgee up here is the biggest rivalry in GPS.

thats bloody strange having armidale in GPS, any thoughts of promoting a CAS school to GPS?

i go to BBC in brisbane, probly the scots equilivilant. do scots suck at rugby too?

Whilst fascinating, any chance this tripe can be moved by the mods ?

Yeh View-Joeys would be one of the biggest rivalries (if not the biggest) in the GPS. A few years back, they used to televise the View-Joeys game every year on ABC, cause it was that big, there would always be a huge crowd and it was usually the game that would decide the premiership as they were the 2 best normally(dont know why they stopped doing that though).

I don't think a CAS school would get moved into the GPS cause the GPS schools wouldn't want the tradition of the GPS changed. Armidale really aren't that big a part of GPS, they are more of an auxiliary member.

Scots have in the last couple of years climbed up the rankings as they have started to import and recruit from the country. Their best players this year were almost all imports, so yeh they are getting better and are very competitve with the top schools (Kings, Joeys, View).

woah - brisbnae gps and sydney gps are very similar.

Terrace and Nudgee gets huge crowds and used to be on ABC too..though terrace's first XV has been ordinary last few years.

gonna take a PUNT on what schools are like brothers comparing Brisbane and Sydney

Nudgee/Joeys - Best rugby schools, rugby are religions there..
Terrace/View - traditonal rugby schools and catholic etc...
BBC/Scots - presbytarian..
Churchie/Shore - anglican, dominant rowing and rugby schools
Toowoomba/Armidale - schools in the country somewhere..
Brisbane State High/Sydney Boys - the public schools...
TSS/Kings - anglican and ages away
BGS/SGS - the grammar schools....
Ipswich/Newington - dunno guess they are out west somewhere.

is AFL a GPS sport in sydney.

It's not really a GPS sport, but some GPS schools do have AFL programs. View is quite into its AFL and plays in a club competition. It's easily the most keen on AFL. SGS for one has a more informal AFL competition that it plays in against other CAS and GPS schools.

PS: Good guess, Newington is in the west somewhere

Meh, Cranbrook can have Sydney High's place if they like. I don't know why we still bother trying to compete with the other GPS schools in rugby etc. Sport is important but High really should have been in another competition years ago.

Why WOULD sydney boys high be in GPS if they cant even put in a first xv team every weekend?? thats a disgrace.

Brisbane state high's first xv are all polynesians, Sydney boys should import some too..
