That was a disappointing first game. I wanted to hear more from the huge Swans crowd! Maybe I jinxed us. Good news, that’s my last home and away game!

Oh and seeing Hanners wasn't a good omen ☹️.
So you went...I could still hear the Swans chant. Were there a lot of supporters there

Yes there were heaps of Swans there. I was sitting on the fence and didn't realise there was so many standing behind me. The noise was incredible after Chloe kicked her goal and when she look the mark that was paid in the back.

I wonder what the attendance number was.

When a swans player has a free kick, is it team policy to ignore Zippy as she flies past for the short handball? Zip's always looking to create drive but she seems to be ignored about 5 times a game. It must be very frustrating.
A lot of short options were ignored. A player would be screaming for it but they kept kicking long. Played straight into Collingwood's hands.

Absolute shocker today. What upset me about the girls today was that they looked exactly like our boys when they have a shit day. 5 metres off their opponents all day, no movement further up field when in possession leading to being outnumbered, only to not run the other way and be outnumbered down the other end as well. Add to that missed tackles, when tackling has been one of our strongest features to date this year. Umpire 58 is a piece of shit too. Had an absolute mare and we we told him so turned around and smiled with a shit eating grin. He ****ing knew some of the frees were there. campaigner.

Most disappointing was the fact, the swans fans really turned out today. Good numbers and bloody vocal only to be let down.

Overall a very disappointing performance, hardly anyone had a good game, and I fear we were complacent. I wondered if we were getting ahead of the ball (and ourselves) because although we ran hard when they won the contest (which they kept doing) they kept getting a headstart and out into space and that led to easy uncontested possessions that were so frustrating to witness.

I balance that with reminding myself (as Scott Gowans did) that our team is pretty much the youngest and least experienced team in the comp, and that does help me feel better. I kept scoffing as the commentators described us as flag fancies. I think I have, in my most optimistic moments thought we may make top 4 and contend (and we may yet), but even then I have recognised that the chance of us winning the premiership is very small. More realistically, we are still a way off contending with the likes of North Melbourne and it's unclear how much the Crows and the Lions have come back to the pack. The Demons were brought down a peg yesterday in an upset I thought was bigger than ours given the Pies good form in recent weeks.

Among the things to lament:

  • our team defence and pressure seemed down on our efforts in previous weeks, across the park
  • we got beaten up at the contest
  • we used the ball poorly
  • we lost the battle to spread the ball faster and better (that Gowans had identified as being important during the week)
  • the coaches and our leaders were unable to adjust and fix the problems, at least not until it was too late.

Our leaders did try to stand up and stem the flow but they weren't able to be very effective without the support of their teammates (barring Ham's nearly one woman goal). Molloy, Ham, Gardiner and Kennedy stood out for their effort. Van Loon, Pullar and even O'Sullivan (one of her better performances, unfortunate about her knee injury) also tried hard I thought. I was also satisfied with Grunden and Hausegger even though their performances were flawed - they are starting to look like they have long term futures.

The number of players that went missing though, was long and included: the Hamilton sisters, Moloney, Cooper, McCarthy and Martin. I thought that perhaps the forwards did not get much supply (certainly the quality of the supply was low - we missed Sofia Hurley there!) but I was astounded to read that we won the inside 50 count 35-25! That just goes to show how poor our ball use was (and kicking efficiency - a lot of those entries were just intercepted immediately).

Anyway, a big reality check. Good luck to Collingwood. Hopefully we are reminded to take GWS more seriously, especially since they won yesterday too. (I bet GWS would have preferred us to beat Collingwood.)

Good post and a solid point about our youth. I wonder if there are any stats to show were our age profile stacks up against other teams?

Was thinking exactly the same mate. We played almost the full game like we have been playing first quarters.
Reminded me of some of the AFLM games this year where on paper we should've come out and dominated, but the team appeared to have this attitude that the win will just fall nto there hands without any need to work for it. A cetain bombers game at Marvel comes to mind (to name one).

It's about this time in the last couple of weeks I've written a preview for the girls. Given they've been our two poorest outings of the season, I don't think I'll jinx us again.
Your previews are great. Please do one if its not heartbreaking to write down our current limitations. Or maybe wait till we see the injury report. If Sofia is available that will add flavour to the preview

Sofia back would be great but I'm not expecting it. I actually wonder if the injury report might make some dire reading after the pies debacle.

The way O'Sullivan's knee buckled looked ominous. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. Lexi copped a solid blow to the chest. Morphett landed awkwardly at one point and with her history, wouldn't surprise me at all if she's not up for this week.

I was sitting near that Lexi contest. The noise I heard was horrendous. I've never heard anything like that in the men's. I hope she's ok.
