Toast Tackling

I was soooo impressed with our teams tackling display on the weekend, I thought it worthy of a little discussion.

Now many people on here and commentators have quoted the most irrelevant statistic in football, "number of tackles" in the past 2 years so please no-one bring that up(we all know numbers are not reflective of pressure, how well players are tackling and whether you're getting tackles because you're second to the pill), we've heard it all before and as much as we'd all like the more useful "number of broken tackles", that statistic doesn't exist...

Annnnyway, on the weekend woww...I don't even remember a time where a Port player easily shrugged off one of our tackles...in fact there were 5/6 times where I was resigned to the fact that i'd see a Port breakaway as a result of a mistackle only to see the port player bone crunchingly wrapped up in an epic tiger tackle!! It was like we were scared of Ports pace and it gave the guys the motivation to stick the unstickable!! 3 examples i remember vividly were Dylan Grimes, Chris Newman and Reece Conca, who all had an absolute beauty each. I haven't seen us tackle like that since that West Coast win at the start of last year!! It was also really nice to see some proof of development in a game where we actually looked more physically developed.

Is this one of the very keys to us moving forward? Disscuusssss..

Play like we did yesterday for the rest of the season, and we'll finish 11-11, and go into 2015 having won 8 of our last 9 games (we won't beat Sydney at ANZ).

Our pressure on the ball carrier has been great since the North Melbourne game (and even in that game, was good for a half). Slowly the consistency of effort and attitude has risen to a respectable standard, and the fruits of this were on show yesterday.

Port are not in their absolute best form, but they are still a very good quality side when it comes to hard work and pressure, and yesterday we outdid them in both of those areas (among others).

It was a great win!

Our pressure and takling in our forward line was immense yesterday. Needs to happen every bloody week.

why not? If they have top spot locked away they may just rest some key players ala Fremantle last season. It's possible.

Yeah it was bloody great to watch , needs to be the bare minimum tackling intensity for every game every week for the rest of our games ever. Bringing that sort of intensity in round 16 is a basic standard at most clubs. Congrats on us for finally achieving it as it was great to watch and so different than the rest of the year
