Everyone saw that tackle by Jimmy Walker I assume...
My question is this: Why are there not more tackles like that in AFL footy?
In every other tackling sport, players are taught to drive through their hips and upwards for maximum effectiveness, however in the AFL it seems players are taught to 'wrap' first and contain. This IMO results in many arm tackles being run through.
Byron Pickett is a great hip tackler and the reason why he is so effective. I defy anyone to show me a player that has an effective disposal after being tackled properly and with drive from the tackler and not the 'group hug' style that is prevalent today.
Thoughts?
