Awful

Plain awful. It has been for a while, but this year I've started to notice it a lot more.

Our tackles just don't stick at all. It doesn't matter which opposition player it is, even skinny kids are just waltzing through our attempted tackles.

Is it technique? Is it a lack of strength? What the hell is it? Because it's bloody frustrating.

Generally when we win, it seems like our pressure has been excellent.

Games against the Bulldogs, Sydney, Brisbane etc. I think our tackling and overall pressure was a clear factor in us winning those games.

On the other hand, in the games we've lost, they've felt liked they lacked lusture and determination.

weak tackles in which they are just holding the guernsey while they handball off and run into open goals happened about four times.
the tackles count was also about 46-65 in WC favour which just shows an absolute lack of accountability and freedom given.
If Mattner is not on the wing he is dragged away and we do not have him and VB doing the job and so it doesn't get done right.
Either Roo is on ball or he is way off it being in-between gets him caught out with chasing.
As well as a few of the other guys are doing in possessions and contested possession, Knights, Porplysia, Reilly's tackling seems off the mark.
Putting a hand out and falling down from being flat footed isn't the best way to lay a tackle.

adelaide laid 76 tackles - 45 of which were effective 59.2%
West coast laid 85 tackles, 53 we effective. 62.3%

seems pretty similar over a whole game

Its definately dropped off.
Bode Mattner and Welsh appeared to be our better tacklers but now its stopped.
I guess if they aint got the ball you cant tackle 'em but what sh!ts me is when they do get it we arent within cooee' of them on most occasions.

How many times do you see it come out of our fwd 50 with ease by looping handball to a man with no one near him. I blame our forwards coach for that.

"Remember boys, the basics are non-negotiable". I think this needs to be tattooed to their hands to remind them of it for every game! You know we will win when we are tackling in packs.

I found on the weekend that thommo's tackles were shocking, He just couldnt get one to stick.

Usually he is a good tackler, hopefully he was just having an off week. It was disappointing after such a big build up I thought the intensity would of been there.

Sorry to harp on it but this is exactly why we have a few passengers in the midfield that should be dropped back to the SANFL before even contemplating Mark Ricciuto as an option.

If they are not willing (or don't understand the importance) of doing the non negotiable team aspect of the rules then they are automatically a liability on the field.

Just as some pointed out regarding Luke Jericho; just because he got 20 touches doesn’t mean he played well – have a look at what his direct opponent did with and with out the ball. When the team amasses over 380 possessions most midfields stats will look good.

I can't believe you'd drop others and not him - does his form warrant retention over the others???? Think with your head and not your heart. It must be heartbreaking to other players to see their captain struggling so badly.

Quality gets the goal, quantity without quality gets the opposition rebound goals.
Thompson's delivery and disposal forward is a train wreck as well with Edwards, Knights Shirley and Doughty in various differing manners.
Porplysia has been kicking horribly out of defense also.

Roo has NOT been good since he came back. He's done one or two good things. That's it. Period. I am definitely not thinking with my heart because he would be there every day and twice on Sundays if I were. Opposition players flicked him to the side like a rag doll on the weekend and there was no way he was ever going to catch them once he regained his balance. He is certainly not back to his brilliant best, miles from it, and I believe he is a liability to the team in our precarious state at the moment. We are 7 wins from 13 games. There are 9 games left. We HAVE to win 5 of those 9 games to make the finals - maybe even 6 as the competition is so level this year. I don't know about you people, but I want my team to make the finals and we can't do that with a team of 17 on the field. Im not saying sack him, Im saying let's support his return away from massive crowd expectations. Let him slowly return to the frey and find his feet again. 10 months is a long time to be out of the game. Bring him back slowly and then he will be right to come out all guns blazing for the finals. That's what I would do.

I agree with him. Post how effective our tackles were on average for the previous two years. I'd doubt they'd be as low as 59.2%. It was a friggin joke how easily players ran through our blokes on the weekend.
We've been told that heavy tackling drills haven't been on the menu at training this season for injury reduction purposes. I suppose we're seeing the effect of that.

59.2% was one of our better performances.

I don't have effectiveness stats for last year or 2005, but total tackles:

• 2007 = 67.90 (9th)
• 2006 = 68.80 (4th)
• 2005 = 63.80 (11th in league)

as for effectiveness, I looked at the first 6 rounds this year:

• Round 1 loss essendon 48/32 effective 66.60%
• Round 2 win Bulldogs 54/25 effective 46.20%
• Round 3 win Power 72/39 effective 54.1%
• Round 4 win sydney 56/35 effective 62.5%
• Round 5 Loss Freo 75/40 effective 53.30%
• Round 6 Loss Collingwood effective 54/24 44.4%

74 tackles with 59.2% effectiveness looks alright to me!

I didn't see that many effective tackles in the game, if they can get a effective hand pass or kick to a player the tackle didn't do anything.
The players disposal must be caused to be ineffective.
The trouble with the stats is that you don't see where the tackles are if they are in a stoppage it likely just means your ruck man lost and they got the ball first and your that close and it's at ground level that tripping over in their direction gets you an effective tackle there is also the pile on tackling.
The hit out count has 22 to 34 WC favour but you can be damn sure Adelaide's ruck taps were ineffective so that leaves a lot of room for pack tackling so pretty much.

Adelaide effective tackles = 45
really doesn't look too great
doesn't leave much room for tackles around the ground

Oh and it cuts both ways with this heart feeling thing which is pretty much crap anyway as it's just idealism which has nothing to do with true sentiment.
But if you don't feel he is playing well you can't stand to see it, not a single Crows player was up to chasing down anyone and for weeks and weeks most crows have just been cantering along behind opposition players not looking to tackle, I don't see that being the case in other sides we are about 12th in the league for what would appear to be effective tackles.
If they are not doing tackling drills at training this Craig should know bleeds into the game, if it's being done on purpose it's not bright and if it's just not the focus what is going on at training as disposal work isn't paying off.
Fact is Roo needs to play well at AFL level, not SANFL level as getting a bunch of possessions at SANFL level doesn't make for getting into the side it's just not the same pace, the only thing there would be is game confidence do you perceive this as a likelihood that he lacks confidence? Would it increase his confidence to be omitted? You think in some way that he is not trying?
He kinda does train and he kinda does know how to play and like you said he has been out of footy for some time but we aren't doing anything in finals without all the best players doing well.
Without that you are just making up the numbers.

it's a simple thing, people make "observations" all the time: sometimes the official stats suggest what they saw wasn't right. nothing's going to change that our tackling was one of the best for the season. sorry.

Our tackling has always been pathetic, and when we do, it's too high or in the back. What we need to do is get out the tackling bags in the pre-match warm up and get them to practice on there. The improved tackling from doing this will be evident not long after we do this.

I agree, if we dont tackle and push the player in the back, we tackle too high or our tackles are too easily brushed off.
