Saying 'we have the ball all the time and thus get less chance to lay tackles' is a flawed argument because IIRC an effective tackle is only counted if it leads to either a free kick for, a stoppage or a turnover. Therefore the sides with a higher possession count can easily also have a higher tackle count. Pressure wins you the ball back, it's as simple as that.

Two rounds in it's not a great area of concern but in the following weeks I'd expect a concerted effort to lift the amount of tackles we have per game.

If we possess the ball more than the opposition then yes we cant tackle them as we have the ball and is more than likely to have less tackles. Plus this retention means less stoppages and the ability to actually tackle a player. But that doesnt mean you also cant have more tackles but it is definately a product of our run and gun game style imo. If we were more 1 on 1 we would have more and it would also prevent our lack of team defence.

By the way the west wing was a great show. 1 of the best.

My goodness people can be selective! Can you please explain to me and others who feel the same how essendon had 61 to 35 tackles vs Melbourne. Quite clearly essendon were first to the ball all game and melbourne were chasing them!

Can you also explain how sydney who have had a soft draw against GWS and GC have dominated both games are the number 1 tackling side in the first 2 rounds. I understand we're 2 zip but the lengths some supporters will go to to convince themselves that everything is perfect is just extraordinary

Well that's easy to explain.... the opposition sides get to the ball first, get tackled, lose the ball and then Sydney and Essendon kick goals.... duh ;)

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Shane Tuck has laid 1 tackle this year.

1 tackle!

He still gets in hard and wins his own ball, not trying to suggest he's a bit soft, but isn't he usually the leader in the tackling stats? If I was Damien, I would call this inexcusable and would let Tucky know about it... it would only benefit the side. (He's not the only one)

Statistics can be interpreted many ways and presented in a way that serves a particular agenda. Tackles in especially are hard to define. You have tackle with multiple players involved, tackles that result in a spilled ball tackles that result in a free against If you define it as McGuanes on Bootsma they arent that common IMO

We hold the record for most tackles in a game. What relevance does this have? Just about as much as the first 2 rounds have for the rest of the season.

Code:
1. Richmond 142 2010 v PA
2. St Kilda 118 2009 v GE
3. Fremantle 118 2012 v RI
4. Port Adelaide 116 2010 v RI
5. St Kilda 115 2009 v HW
6. Geelong 113 2007 v BL
7. Brisbane Lions 111 2007 v GE
8. North Melbourne 111 2009 v
9. Sydney 111 2011 v WC
10. Brisbane Lions 111 2012 v GE
Was that cousins last game?

Cousins' last game was the R.22 Port nearly miracle comeback game at Etihad.

Bump, smashing the dogs in this area. Seen 1 or 2 missed tackles only. Addressed and amended. :thumbsu:

Thats all we wanted to see. :thumbsu: and guess what? We have had more of the ball, A LOT more and we have smashed them in this area, gee wiz, would have thought? ;) No more of this rubbish excuse making thanks, clearly was an area that needed addressing and it has been. Good work tiges

Obviously the Tiger boys read this thread during the week. It can be the only plausible explanation for our improved tackling this week.....

Well done OP!

Cheers, good to see the boys are keeping one eye on what the tiger faithful are sayin!

Yep much, much better pressure effort by the boys. We still played our run and gun style, but didn't give them an inch when the ball was in dispute.

Umpiring was shocking, but we still need to be a bit more careful about our tackling technique on occasions, but thats pretty common right across the board. The game is unrecognisable from even 5 years ago a lot of the time unfortunately, but the team that adjusts quickest is going to get an edge.

Bring on the Pies!!

54 is a vast improvement, but still short of where we'll need to be against the likes of Collingwood, Freo, Geelong, Sydney, Hawthorn & Essendon IMO.

Bit hard to win the tackling count when you've always got the ball. That's what Houli was actually doing with that pass but forgot he should have handballed it instead...

Thats what made yesterday so good, to have 108 more disposals and 5 more tackles shows the pressure at both ends of the ground.

Dissapointed Tucky only had 2. Must be a bit of concern for Dimma.

re tuck's tackles:
maybe cos he's always throwing himself at the ball, he ends up on the ground and in no position to tackle

Last year 124 tackles @ 5.6 a gamem =12th in the league (includes finals players) to just 3 this year (none against the Blooze) Just not Tuck like.
