These are definitely a niche genre, some people don't like the turn based style and some like myself the more controlled battles.

Have played the classics like the XCOMs, Divinity OS, FF Tactics and have been looking for a new one.

Have seen some good reviews for Disgaea series and see this is available on PS4. Other games rated are Valkyria Chronicles 4 which I have also never played.

What are Disgaea 4 and 5 like? Any other recommendations or anyone else here a fan of the genre?

You could try the Advance Wars series on GBA/Nintendo DS.

I've played every Valkyria Chronicles from 1 to 4 and I enjoy the series immensely. The mechanics definitely get better from game to game. Story... I'll get back to you.

Playing AOW Planetfall at the moment. A combination of Civ Like empire building and xcom type turnbased battles. Good to see this type of deep tactical game on the consoles although the learning curve is quite steep

jagged alliance 2, if you haven't played it already. one of my favourite games ever.
funny, bit of gore, inventory management, light rpg stuff, lots of replayability.
remakes, reboots of this game continue to be unsuccessful, keep trying to reinvent the wheel. would post a video but it doesn't really lend itself to that, and people insist on talking over their play-through.

+ the original fallouts, when they were turn-based.

Awesome game back in the day.
I Actually, originally hated it when I first came across it back in 1999, after buying it from Bali and getting my PS chipped. I thought "WTF this is absolute crap.. and really flipping hard, screw this"
Then I persevered and got midway through the 3rd act but got stuck on Velius. I made the mistake of not having a backup save file and trapped myself in that series of castle battles without being able to grind to a higher level.

fast forward over 20 years later and i've finally been able to play it through to the end. :tearsofjoy:
