Blues need to beat a) Cats. b) Pies - in that order.

How do we go about that in order to win the flag.

Watching the swans play the pies tonight they are all over them in terms of pressure, and the pies, although winning, really fell apart when serious one on one pressure was applied on them, letting the zones go and playing the man really pushed them to breaking.

This is pretty obvious, the pies arent great players, great team, their winning formula came from things such as the press, which everyone else has now understood, they are very, very very beatable.

I see so few threads on tactics - pies can be torn to bits by playing them man on man by a team like the blues since we stack up about 5 million to one relative to that heckin'g rabble. They are a team, thats their strength, play them man on man they are finished.

We could win this season - we can - .......its a matter of how are we going to do it....

How about the cats - they are all MAN, to a degree so are the saints and hawks, Pies are well drilled kids.

the las tround we have the bye and Collingwood and Geelong play, the belt the suitcase out of each other then we pounce in the finals, fresh and firing.

I can't see us losing to Geelong at the MCG.
As mentioned in the OP, pressure is the key to toppling the pies.
They fall to pieces when they can't roam in packs and support each other as seen last night and when we played them earlier this year.
In round 3 we had them panicked, they resorted to hacking the ball off the ground and just knocking it forward.

That night every 50/50 bounce fell into their arms, the ball was bouncing at right-angles away from our guys.
This won't happen again and we are a much improved team since then.
You don't win a flag without a little bit of luck, if it comes our way and we hold our nerve the premiership is ours for the taking.

I think we should maybe include WCE in the equation too after yesterday

they beat us at well under full strength and even then relied on thuggery to get the advantage.

Not a threat. They'll make the finals and then they'll get obliterated. They remind me of Essendon in '09.

They are better than essendon 09, they will make finals smash the crap out of 8th place, then loose in week 2.

your being a bit "the sky is falling" in most of your posts since yesterday.
i say you mention injuries cant be an excuse and to a degree that is true had we copped these injuries over a few weeks we should have won yesterday but i dont think you understand how playing in a team works and just throwing one person into the team with little experience for a couple months or so they look lost let alone so many at once.

the lack of effort people saw was disappointing but some of that can be with so many changes at once (and late ones too) even our regular players felt lost with the new inclusions then new positions to plug holes.
If collingwood, geelong or anyone had 6 outs in 1 week against a side that played very well they would get rolled too, hardly a game to set the tone of our season by.

back to topic, we have good tactics and had geelong not been lucky in the way of warknock's kick we would have won that game, geelong dont worry me we match up on them well, collingwood is in our heads we are faster than them and can beat them if we focus our game plan already beats the forward press by moving too quickly for their spread. but til we can get the "collingwood are world beaters and will beat us" attitude out of our head we dont stand a chance. here is to hoping we loose to them i round 17 then smack them about when we meet in the finals.

Did you watch yesterdays game or just a replay of last year?

If they stay fit (Kerr, Cox, Glass etc) they will be very competitive.

They can win the ball out of the middle and don't have to deliver lace out to get a mark in the F50. That's dangerous in anyones books.

As soon as I saw Curnow, Duigan and Robbo all out I thought we were in trouble. When Jammo went down it was by how far.

Those who don't rate WCE do so at their own embarrassment. If they make the top 4 they WILL play in a prelim (barring serious and plentiful injuries).

Have you seen the Eagles draw? It may well be us heading to Subiaco week 2 of the finals.

From a top 4 perspective, yesterdays game was an absolute shocker to lose.

I watched the game not only in person but sat through a complete replay to see how mediocre the two teams were. My belief stands.

As soon as I saw Curnow, Duigan and Robbo all out I thought we were in trouble. When Jammo went down it was by how far.

This is either testimony to how decisively average the West Coast Eagles are or how good we were to keep it to six goals. It should have been an absolute shellacking.

As I don't believe that we played good football save for a minor spell to start the third quarter I am at an absolute miss as to why everyone is overhyping the Eagles.

All yesterdays game proved to me was how much of a three team race this season is. We're not as good (depth wise) as what many believed we were. There are some easy delist options. We're still a season away from being a legitimate premiership contender. A good draft and trade week will see us there.

The Eagles are a finals side this year. However, they truly are no better than the Bombers of 2009. The fact that they are challenging for the top four is testimony to how weak most of the teams in the AFL are.

Look at the ladder and look at who is below them. I have never seen an AFL season where all but the top four, maybe five teams, are lucky to keep within 7-10 goals of the top 2-3 teams. That Fremantle, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Essendon and Richmond are fighting it out for 2 finals positions is an absolute farce.

Don't let the AFL's mediocrity (with two and a half teams that are great) get in the way of the hype machine. If it was any other season the Eagles would be just another team making up the numbers. They really should have slaughtered us yesterday.

I challenge anyone to find a more mediocre season of football.

Fixed. ...

Edit: Their draw is quite similar to ours, except they have a couple games extra of 'easy' games. .. Cats is a big game for them, they are coming off the bye. .. Hard to maintain the intensity they had on Sunday. .. They could possibly drop a couple on the road, Saints and Melbourne loom as danger games for them. ..

Our run home isn't that bad either. Really only 2 tough games there, the rest we should win.

Freo in Perth would be a daunting task but that club is all over the place at the moment.
